Ricky Barnes lit up TPC Four Seasons with a 4-under-par 33-33=66 in the final round of a windy HP Byron Nelson Championship to finish the tournament at 5-under 275.
Given the blustery conditions, many of the players just beginning their rounds would likely pay a king's ransom for Barnes' scorecard. He made it through his round with just one bogey to three birdies and an eagle. The putter was the difference, gaining over two strokes on the field for the round with the flat stick. To date, his best finish of the season was a T16 at the Humana Challenge. Given the conditions, it's almost a certainty that he will eclipse that today.

Barnes has ridden quite the roller coaster this week, opening with a 64 only to post a disappointing 76 in the second round. In today's navigation of TPC Louisiana, he circled six birdies with the longest from 12 feet on the par-5 11th. All of his other damage was done from inside eight feet. Should he challenge the course record he matched in the opening round again in the finale, he will stand a chance at hoisting his first PGA TOUR trophy.

As much that went right on Thursday, it all went wrong today. He failed to convert on all 14 birdie opportunities en route to a score 12 strokes higher than his lid-lifter. Barnes missed two chances inside nine feet in addition to squaring two bogeys and a double. At 4-under 140, he's already eight strokes back of the 36-hole lead.

Due to saturated turf, lift, clean and place is in play today, so Barnes' feat will get an asterisk. However, this is just his second sub-70 in his last 20 rounds. He's missed seven of eight cuts upon arrival. Today at TPC Louisiana, he split all 14 fairways and hit 15 greens in regulation. After an eagle from 11'9" at the par-5 second hole, he tacked on seven birdies, six of which on his last eight holes. His longest conversion of the day was just 12'9" at the fourth hole. Barnes' lone blemish was a bogey-5 at the sixth hole where he failed to get up and down from a lie just in front of the green. He's the seventh to sign for a 64 in the eight-year history of its role as host of this tournament.

Barnes had missed his previous six cuts after starting the season with a pair of top 20s. His lap around Redstone today to secure the payday wasn't without its adventures ... and misadventures. He missed only two greens in regulation and still swallowed four bogeys, three of which as a result of three-putts from 60'2", 48'4" and 16'6" at the third, 14th and 18th holes, respectively. However, he also rolled in a whopping eight birdies, five of which disappearing from beyond 10 feet. The highlights of the round measured 33'10" at 7 and 20'1" at 11.

Ricky Barnes made a splash with a couple of top-20 finishes to start 2013, but enters The Honda Classic having missed his last four cuts.
Barnes' history at PGA National includes a fourth-place finish in 2011. That, and a week off, could mean he will break out of his funk this week. He enters the week eighth in Par 3 Performance, which could be a deciding factor in his favor when he plays PGA National's Bear Trap. The Bear Trap includes two par 3s with watery graves for wayward approaches.

Barnes has endured some inconsistency at this event, but it's not a stretch to state that it's a microcosm of his career. One day at a time, however, and today was a good one. He pieced a birdie-birdie-birdie-eagle-birdie run on his outward nine, and then erased two bogeys with three birdies coming in. He'll try to parlay this great start into another red number at vulnerable Nicklaus Private at PGA West on Friday.
