In a follow-up to Alex Miceli's report last Wednesday, Rex Hoggard of GolfChannel.com reported today that J.B. Holmes sustained a fracture in his left ankle.

The report added that Holmes is expected to be out 8-12 weeks. This was the worst-case scenario following his spill while rollerblading. He was scheduled to have an MRI the same as Miceli's report, but as is often the case in the world of golf news, it takes several days for the other shoe to drop. Holmes will be in a cast for another week before he takes the next step on his road to recovery.

According to Miceli's report (which can be viewed at the link below; cue it to 14:30), Holmes took a spill on some pavement near his home at Isleworth, Fla. He was diagnosed with a sprain and probable fracture. The golfer was scheduled to have an MRI today to learn of the extent of the injury. He hasn't played since missing the cut at The Honda Classic and didn't commit to this week's Tampa Bay Championship. Holmes isn't eligible for the Masters. He's just 1-for-5 on the season with a T50 at Pebble Beach.

The shriek you hear is the collective angst of course history buffs everywhere. How could a golfer that hasn't finished worse than T12 in the last five editions of the NTO not even come close to a payday? Well, when you miss 17 of 36 greens, you're going to have trouble earning your keep anywhere. That was Holmes' clip during his visit this week. He neutralized five birdies with seven bogeys and a double. He's now 1-for-4 on the season with a forgettable T50 at Pebble Beach.

J.B. Holmes hasn't made any noise to start the 2013 season, but has a solid history at the Northern Trust Open and is in the field this week.

Holmes has made just one of his three cuts to kick off the year, and that was a mere T50 at Pebble Beach last week. If past performance at Riviera CC is any indicator, this could be the week that he turns it all around. He's seen the weekend in each of his six starts, including four top 10s and another top 25. He's finished inside the top eight in four of the last five seasons.

With the long South Course at Torrey Pines on tap, the bomber's length could take center stage. He's made the cut here five times in seven tries, but the real value of this week could be examining his form to get a feel for his game ahead of the Waste Management Phoenix Open. He's twice won in Phoenix.
