Like many, Marino struggled in the windier conditions in the finale, but he still pocketed $16,362.89 in what is his second consecutive cut made (T61, Wells Fargo). While he's been injured, it's still hard to believe that this is the first time that he's gone 2-for-2 since January 2012. Today's paycheck leaves him with 10 starts on his Major Medical Extension to earn $413,596 and retain status. |

The PGA TOUR's Media page on Twitter added the modifier "lingering," thus suggesting that this is the reason why Marino has been in and out of commitments for a few weeks. He opened with an 8-over-par 41-39=80 that included three bogeys, two doubles and a triple. He was scheduled to begin his second round on the first tee at noon CT. Back in play after withdrawing early from both Tampa Bay and Houston, Marino went 2-for-10 in birdie opportunities today but still stood 1-under through 11 holes. Alas, he doubled-bogeyed the third and sixth holes and squeezed in a bogey at 4 to say goodbye to a red number. Despite the downward spiral on his inward nine, he capped off his round with some style, rolling in a par save from 12'1" at the par-4 ninth. |

Marino double-bogeyed the par-4 17th hole and managed only a par at the par-5 18th, thus seeing his first chance at a top 10 in 22 months go by the boards. Still, he picked up a check worth $94,550.00 at Torrey Pines, leaving him with 18 starts on his Major Medical Extension to bank $455,824 and retain status. Games can ignore the MME, however, as he's a legitimate fantasy commodity once again. |

He enjoyed a solid first couple of rounds, suffering just one bogey to sit 4-under at the midpoint, but he'd erase eight birdies on the weekend with nine bogeys en route to rounds of 70 and 71. Still, it's better than nothing in his return to competition. He now has 20 starts on his Major Medical Extension to earn $550,374 and retain status. Marino breaks par in return to competition | 01/10/2013 11:26 PM
News
Steve Marino carded a 1-under-par 34-35=69 in his opening round of the Sony Open in Hawaii.
PGATOUR.com
Impact
Welcome back. This was Marino's first action since the Travelers Championship in June. After that failed midseason (second) comeback from surgery on his left knee, he went on to have a stem cell injection and then didn't start hitting balls again until October. Today at Waialae, he hit 13 greens and suffered just one bogey. His longest conversion of the round was a par save from 12'10" at the second hole. He'd tap in for birdie at the par-5 18th to secure a red number. Given his ordeal over the last 12 months, making the cut is quite acceptable this week. The bonus is that he's already back inside the ropes after gamers were left guessing due to the absence of information over the last few months. |
