Dustin Johnson has been removed from the published field of this week's HP Byron Nelson Championship.
Sigh. It seems that it's no longer a matter of if, but when. He called it quits before his second round at TPC Sawgrass last week due to an injury in his lower back, and that trailed an early WD at Quail Hollow due to an irritated left wrist.

DJ was scheduled to go off the first tee at 1:39 p.m. ET. He opened with a 2-over-par 36-38=74. Johnson cited an irritated left wrist that prevented him from giving it a go at Quail Hollow last week, so don't be surprised if this is the reasoning for today's decision. If an explanation is released, we will relay it to you.

If he was truly suffering from an irritated left wrist last week, then today's effort suggests that he's still dealing with it. DJ hit only 10 greens in regulation and failed to save par six times, carding five bogeys and a double. The lap around TPC Sawgrass wasn't without its highlights, however, as he drilled home birdies from 26'5" and 27'1" at the 10th and 18th holes, respectively.

Despite a bogey-par-bogey start today, DJ was atop the leaderboard for a spell thanks to four birdies after 13 holes to reach 2-under on the round. However, he closed bogey-double bogey-par-bogey-double bogey and eschewed a post-round interview. Johnson signed his card sitting four strokes off the 36-hole clubhouse lead.

If there's a perfect example of why experience matters at Augusta National, look no further than DJ's slate. He's 3-for-3 but hasn't fared better than a T30 in his debut in 2009. Prior to today's loop, he broken 70 just once (68, second round, 2011). He missed last year's edition with a back injury. Today he hit 12 greens and took just 24 putts. He played the quartet of par 5s in bogey-free 4-under with an eagle and two birdies. He added birdie-3s at 1 and 9. Johnson's lone blemish occurred at the par-4 17th where he squared a bogey.

Johnson got it done in the finale by knocking down the mid-ranged putts. He made six putts of 13 feet or longer for birdie or eagle in his navigation of Redstone's greens, but failed to convert a 4'6" birdie on 11 and a 7'5" par on 12 that could prove fatal. In all, he circled seven birdies and an eagle, while squaring two bogeys. Having failed to secure a top 10 since his win at Kapalua to start the year, his performance this week gives us confidence that his focus has returned just in time for major season. He is not in the field at the Valero Texas Open, so we expect to see him next at the Masters.

Today, he hit 14 greens in regulation and converted four birdies, the long of which just 12'5" at the 15th hole. The only blemish on his card was a bogey-5 at the third hole where he rinsed his approach. He's five strokes back of the clubhouse lead.

DJ's struggles since his win at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions have been fairly well documented, but his game seems to be rounding into form just in time for the majors. He circled five birdies to just three bogeys in his third lap around TPC Blue Monster at Doral, with four of those birdies coming from outside of eight feet. He enters the final round at 9-under 207.

DJ hit 15 greens in regulation today and rolled in five birdies, including respective conversions from 12'6" and 22'10" at the third and fourth holes, but he parred all four par 5s at TPC Blue Monster of Trump Doral during his round. He's 7-under 137 at the midpoint, four strokes adrift of the 36-hole clubhouse lead.

With eight birdies against just one bogey on his first 16 holes, DJ filled the role as a rabbit this afternoon, but he tumbled from the top spot due to a double bogey at the par-4 17th hole where he didn't reach the green until his fourth stroke. He also bogeyed the treacherous par-4 18th where he had to pitch out after driving into deep rough left of the fairway. Prior to both of those setbacks, half of his birdies found the cup from beyond 10 feet, the longest of which a 28-footer at the par-4 11th hole. Johnson birdied all four par 5s at TPC Blue Monster at Trump Doral today.

On a day that will provide relief to gamers everywhere, Dustin Johnson posted a 4-under-par 33-33=66 in his opening round of The Honda Classic, good for a piece of the early clubhouse lead.
It's hard to believe on the surface that this is his best aggregate since a second-round 66 at Kapalua, but those paying attention since understand what a grind it's been for the Jupiter, Fla. resident. After an illness and withdrawal at Waialae, he went 1-for-3 with a T51 at the Farmers, and then closed out the West Coast Swing by getting trounced by Alexander Noren in the WGC-Match Play. Today was vintage, however and thankfully. He hit 15 greens and erased one bogey (at the par-4 16th) with five birdies, including at both par 3s on The Bear Trap. His conversion at 17 measured 15'3".

Judging by the score and his recent play, you'd think that DJ didn't bother to show, but that would be ignoring Noren's excellence at Dove Mountain. Johnson completed 13 hole in 1-under-par before conceding the dagger at the 14th hole. Prior to the clincher, Noren scored 6-under and won all six holes of the match. It's his first match win in two appearances. He'll square off against the winner of Graeme McDowell v. Padraig Harrington in Friday's second round.

DJ played in the late-early draw, but we waited him out to see if the freshening wind would provide an assist for him to backdoor his way into the weekend. No such luck. He hit only 20 greens in regulation this week, resulting in seven bogeys (all on Thursday) and two doubles (both today). Eight birdies, including six in the second round, weren't enough to prevent his second consecutive missed cut. It's the first time since the summer of 2009 that he's failed to cash in successive starts, although the first of that tandem was a result of a withdrawal due to a wrist injury at the Travelers Championship. The last time he officially missed two straight cuts was during the Fall Series of his rookie year in 2008.

In five trips, Johnson has made every cut and finished inside the top seven four of those occasions. His $2,664,938 in earnings illustrate why we will likely never see him sit this one out. Don't forget, had a great opportunity to win the 2010 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach before disasters on the second and third holes derailed him. The only other person in the field that garners respect equal to or above Johnson is defending champion and four-time winner, Phil Mickelson.

It's better than the alternative but gamers probably expected two or three shots lower. Coming off flu-like symptoms that bumped him from the Sony Open after 27 holes, he circled an eagle and three birdies to offset two bogeys today.

As expected, the season's first champ will return at Torrey Pines. He had to withdraw after 27 holes at the Sony Open due to flu-like symptoms. This will be his sixth consecutive appearance at the Farmers. He's cashed four times, including a T3 in 2011.

Fresh off a four-stroke win at Kapalua over in Maui, DJ managed to find only 10 greens in regulation at Waialae today. He was 3-under through 12 holes before stumbling in with three bogeys to let the red number slip away. Among his five birdies were conversions of 11'5" and 10'10" at the 10th and first holes, respectively.

Johnson has quite the knack for taking home the hardware in 54-hole affairs, having won each of the last three. He looked to be cruising with three birdies on the first six holes, but ran into trouble off the tee on the par-5 ninth, leading to a provisional and eventually a bogey. He got it back with a birdie on the 12th, but gave Stricker a chance to close the gap when a second wayward drive resulted an a double bogey on the 13th. An ulikely eagle chip-in on the par-4 14th ended the drama, and he would coast the rest of the way, adding birdies on the two remaining par 5s. When it was all added up, he ended the week at 16-under 69-66-68=203 and was the only man with all three rounds in the 60s.

Johnson simply overpowered the course, driving a par 4 and looking at numerous eagle putts during his second round before finally converting one from five feet on the 18th green. Through the first two rounds, he has played the eight par 5s he's faced in 8-under with six birdies and an eagle. He has won at least one tournament in each of his first five PGA TOUR seasons, and looks to ensure that streak continues right off the bat in Tuesday's finale.

Johnson started on fire, opening with four birdies and zero bogeys on the back nine before turning his attention to the front. He would add two more birdies, but trip over two bogeys on his second nine. While it's a surprise to see Mark Wilson atop the leaderboard, Johnson joining him was almost expected. The king of 54-hole events, he's won the last two on TOUR with the most recent to 2011 Barclays.

Dustin Johnson returned from an extended absence just in time to capture the FedEx St. Jude Classic, earning a fourth trip to the Hyundai Tournament of Champions.
Johnson went from the WGC-Cadillac Championship in early March all the way to the Memorial in June without a start before winning his second tournament back. He closed out his year with top 10s in each of the four FedExCup Playoff events, making him a must-watch in 2013. He has a win in each of his seasons on the PGA TOUR.
