At 9-under-par 69-66=135, Kevin Chappell was the first to establish the 36-hole clubhouse lead at THE PLAYERS.
Chappell has hit just 23 greens in regulation, but he's filled up the cup with an eagle and 12 birdies to offset five bogeys. He's played the par-5 11th hole in 3-under with a birdie from 20'9" on Thursday and an eagle conversion measuring just 10'10" today. Three other birdies found the cup from beyond 13 feet, and he poured in a par save from 12'8" at No. 5 in the second round. Four of Chappell's five paydays this year have gone for a top 25 -- three were top 15s -- so he's quite comfortable contending.

Chappell is a veteran of two trips to Quail Hollow, following up a missed cut in 2011 with a T52 last season. It's becoming a little difficult to predict when he will show up, but what we can tell is that he makes the most of tournaments when he sees the weekend. He's secured top 25s in each of his four made cuts.

Chappell was bogey-free through 15 holes, but finally suffered his only bogey of the day at the par-3 16th. He bounced back with a kick-in birdie on the par-4 17th before making par at the last. He now heads to TPC San Antonio for the Valero Texas Open.

Chappell was bogey-free 6-under through his first 16 holes, but failed to get up-and-down for par at the 17th after facing a difficult pitch. He entered the week having missed his last five cuts, and is in position to eclipse his season-best T8 at the Humana Challenge with a strong run in the final round. It's been a feast-or-famine season for the UCLA Bruin, with the aforementioned T8 and a T24 at the Waste Management Phoenix Open his only paydays in eight tries.

Chappell's only other trip to Puerto Rico was a missed cut in 2011. While he's only made two cuts in five starts, both have gone for top-25 finishes including a T8 at Humana. At 33rd in GIR and 154th in strokes gained-putting, it doesn't take a sabermatrician to figure out what prevents him from being consistent week in and out.

Starting on the 10th hole at the Palmer Course, he opened with birdies on his first three holes. He would add birdies on three of the final four holes before turning his attention to the front nine. There, he would raise his hand to be put on 59 watch with birdies on four of the first six holes. He narrowly missed an eagle attempt on the par-5 sixth and needed an eagle on the reachable par-4 eighth to have a shot at a course-record tying 59, but settled for a birdie after failing to secure the deuce with a crafty chip. A 3-putt bogey at the last means he won't hoist the trophy, but he heads to the Farmers Insurance Open in solid form.
