Jonathan Byrd made his first cut since returning from injury last week in Harbour Town and looks for a second at this week's Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

It's been well documented that J-Byrd had a lengthy recovery from wrist surgery, and he began his year with back-to-back missed cuts in Texas before some home cooking in South Carolina resulted in a T66. He still hasn't broken 70 this season, which could be a problem on a course like TPC Louisiana that requires some birdies. His only previous trip to this venue was a T12 in 2008, so this could be the week he inserts himself into the thick of contention for the first time in 2013. A better test of his form will come next week at Quail Hollow, where he has contended on multiple occasions including a playoff loss in 2011.

This is Byrd's first live action anywhere since the FedExCup Playoffs last year. He had surgery on his left wrist on Oct. 29 and delayed his comeback until this week. He hit 12 greens at Redstone and rolled in five birdies, including a conversion from 20'8" at the sixth hole, but he offset the par breakers with three bogeys and a double.

When Byrd didn't appear in the field for the Tampa Bay Championship, he promptly alerted his followers on Twitter that he modified his plan to return to competition in Houston. He hasn't played anywhere since the second phase of the 2012 FedExCup Playoffs, and then had surgery on his left wrist on Oct. 29. While he's posted two top 20s in three starts at Redstone's Tournament Course, give him a week (at least) to shed the rust before you begin leaning on him for fantasy support.

It's been a couple of months since we last checked in on Byrd, but the news hasn't changed. Since having surgery on his left wrist on Oct. 29, he's hoped to get back inside the ropes by next month. He may make the Tampa Bay Championship on March 14-17. "You never hear anyone say, `Rush it, don't miss a tournament, get back,'" he said. "I talked to Tom Watson, and he said, `Wait till you're ready, and then wait another month. It takes a while before the belief comes back.'"
