Zach Johnson followed his opening 66 at THE PLAYERS with a 1-under-par 33-38=71 to reach the halfway point in 7-under 137, four strokes off the 36-hole lead.
Despite the red number, this was a disappointing day for ZJ. He landed 15 greens in regulation and missed two birdie putts inside eight feet. He circled just three birdies all day, including conversions from 27'7" at 10 and 12'8" at 12. He even recorded a notable bogey save. After finding water off the tee at the par-4 seventh, he'd eventually stand over an 11'3" attempt that he'd pour in.

ZJ is 8-for-11 this season but his only top 30 in a full-field event was a T23 at the Humana Challenge in January. He began that event with a pair of 66s; it's the last time he's gone as low as he did today. Johnson found 13 greens in regulation at TPC Sawgrass and circled seven birdies to offset a lone bogey. His longest par breaker was his last, curling in a 33'1" attempt at the par-3 17th hole.

ZJ has endured a tough season, but he's also had a rough go at Augusta National since his victory in 2007. After a T20 in his title defense in '08, he's failed to record a top 30 among two paydays. What's more, today's score ends a run of 13 straight rounds of 70 or higher. He hit 13 greens in regulation and poured in four birdies, the last coming at the par-4 18th hole to secure the sub-70.

ZJ's struggles continue. He converted on just one of 20 birdie opportunities at Copperhead this week and suffered 12 bogeys. It's his third missed cut in six stroke-play starts in 2013. He has a pair of top 25s, but that includes a T18 at the 30-man season opener at Kapalua. Johnson also lost in the first round of the WGC-Accenture Match Play.

After opening with a bogey-free 66 at PGA West's Palmer Private on Thursday, ZJ converted an eagle and five birdies to wipe off a lone bogey today. At the time he signed his card, he held a share of the 36-hole clubhouse lead (12-under 132) that lasted all of a few minutes. Johnson will conclude his rotation at Nicklaus Private on Saturday.

Zach Johnson earned a trip to the Hyundai Tournament of Champions after first claiming a victory at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial and following that up with the John Deere Classic title.
He also added runner-up finishes at the RBC Heritage and THE PLAYERS. Unfortunately for Johnson, his record on the Plantation Course isn't quite as sparkling. In five trips, his average finish is 18th with a T6 his best effort. He tied for 23rd in his last outing.
