Cards GM defends Jhonny Peralta signing | 11/25/2013 6:16 PM
NewsGeneral manager John Mozeliak on Monday defended his decision to sign Jhonny Peralta to a four-year, $53 million contract.
Impact"Character and makeup are something we weigh into our decision-making," Mozeliak said. "In his case, he admitted what he did, he took responsibility for it. ... I feel like he has paid for his mistakes, and obviously if he were to make another one, then it would be a huge disappointment." Peralta, 31, was suspended for 50 games this past season following MLB's Biogenesis investigation. Diamondbacks reliever Brad Ziegler, a union player representative, tweeted that "it pays to cheat" and wrote that owners were "encouraging PED use." David Aardsma tweeted: "I had 2 major surgeries in 5 months and made it back clean, nothing pisses me off more than guys that cheat and get raises for doing so."
Cardinals sign Peralta to four-year contract | 11/24/2013 7:38 PM
NewsCardinals signed SS Jhonny Peralta to a four-year, $53 million contract.
ImpactIn the team's press release announcing the signing, Peralta indicated that he "took full responsibility" for his PED violation. He'll be a nice offensive improvement over Pete Kozma, though his range at shortstop may end up infuriating the Cardinals pitching staff.
Peralta near four-year, $52M deal with Cards | 11/24/2013 12:01 PM
NewsFOX Sports' Jon Morosi reports that Jhonny Peralta's contract with the Cardinals will be for four years and a little more than $52 million.
Jon Morosi on Twitter
ImpactIt turns out that the figure Peter Gammons floated last week was dead on. It's a big chunk of change to pay for a good-but-not-great shortstop, but the Cards obviously decided overpaying for Peralta was better than giving up blue chip prospects in a trade. Opinions vary on Peralta's defense, but there's no doubt that he'll be a huge offensive upgrade over Pete Kozma.
Peralta expected to get 4-year deal from STL | 11/23/2013 11:19 PM
NewsFOX Sports' Jon Morosi reported Jhonny Peralta is expected to get a four-year deal from the Cardinals.
Jon Morosi on Twitter
ImpactThe dollar value will be interesting, as a report earlier in the offseason said a four-year contract could run in the area of $52 million but Morosi's co-worker Jon Heyman said $52 million may not even get a team in the conversation. The Tigers didn't extend Peralta a qualifying offer, so the Cardinals or any other team won't lose a first-round pick by signing the 31-year-old. The Cardinals are in position to pay Peralta after shedding some salary in the David Freese deal.
Peralta's price tag may exceed $52 million | 11/23/2013 8:33 PM
NewsOne team that offered Jhonny Peralta a four-year, $52 million deal was told they weren't even "in the game," according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.
Jon Heyman on Twitter
ImpactThe Cardinals are said to be deep in negotiations for the 31-year-old, suggesting they're at least comfortable with the previously reported asking price. How much higher the cost -- and interested teams -- might go is still unknown. Peralta is one of the top free agent shortstops in a market that's not saturated with great options, so he'll likely get what he's asking for, whatever that may be.
Peralta closing in on deal with Cardinals | 11/23/2013 7:08 PM
NewsJhonny Peralta is closing in on a deal with the Cardinals, a source confirmed to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick.
Jerry Crasnick on Twitter
ImpactShortstop has been at the top of the Cardinals' list of priorities and Peralta would allow them to fill the position without giving up some of their young pitching in a trade. It was reported previously that Peralta had multiple deals on the table for four years and $52 million, and the Cardinals were reported as one of the teams interested. The 31-year-old hit .303/.358/.457 in 2013 while appearing in his second All-Star game.
Cardinals may be interested in Peralta | 11/22/2013 8:58 PM
NewsJon Morosi of FOX Sports reports that the Cardinals may be interested in free agent Jhonny Peralta.
Jon Morosi on Twitter
ImpactThe Cardinals are scouring the market for an upgrade at shortstop, and if they believe the 31-year-old can still hack it defensively, his bat would be a welcomed addition to the offense. Peralta is believed to already have multiple four-year, $52 million offers, with the Yankees, Mets and Orioles expressing interest.

ImpactPeralta was said to be seeking a three-year, $45 million deal this offseason, and it appears that his market is heating up quickly. The Yankees and Mets have been looking at Peralta as an option in the infield while the Orioles are reportedly considering him in left field.
Jhonny Peralta seeking as much as $75M | 11/22/2013 5:55 PM
NewsJoel Sherman of the New York Post reports that Jhonny Peralta has been asking for deals in the four-year, $56 million and five-year, $75 million range.
Joel Sherman on Twitter
ImpactESPN's Buster Olney reported earlier this month that Peralta was looking for a three-year, $45 million deal, so it appears he's seeking something in the $14-15 million per year range. They're pretty silly asking prices that are sure to drop. The Yankees, Mets and Orioles are three teams said to be in on Peralta, but they'll likely wait it out until he gets more reasonable.
Orioles like Jhonny Peralta as left fielder | 11/22/2013 12:55 PM
NewsFOX Sports' Jon Morosi reports that the Orioles are interested in Jhonny Peralta as a left fielder.
Jon Morosi on Twitter
ImpactMost teams -- like the Yankees -- figure to be in on Peralta as an infielder, but the Orioles evidently saw enough of him in his limited time in left field in 2013 that they'd be comfortable using him there. He could also eventually move in third base when the Orioles ultimately shift Manny Machado to shortstop. Peralta is reportedly seeking at least a three-year, $45 million contract.
Mets could be priced out on Jhonny Peralta | 11/21/2013 9:49 AM
NewsAndy Martino of the New York Daily News reports that the Mets could be priced out on free agent infielder Jhonny Peralta.
New York Daily News
ImpactMartino cites league sources who are skeptical that the Mets will be willing to spend enough to land Peralta, Curtis Grandson or Nelson Cruz, all of whom they've expressed interest in. Peralta is said to be seeking at least a three-year, $45 million contract.
Peralta wants at least three years | 11/20/2013 3:50 PM
NewsMike Puma of the New York Post reports that Jhonny Peralta wants at least a three-year contract.

ImpactThis backs up a recent report from ESPN's Buster Olney, who wrote that Peralta's representatives were looking for a contract above three years and $45 million. The Mets have expressed interest in the 31-year-old, but they were hoping to land him with a two-year deal.
Report: Yankees interested in Jhonny Peralta | 11/18/2013 3:16 PM
NewsAccording to Jon Morosi and Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, the Yankees have interest in Jhonny Peralta.
Jon Morosi on Twitter
ImpactThe Yanks re-signed Brendan Ryan on Monday and still have Derek Jeter in the fold, but Peralta could be viewed as a third baseman or corner outfielder. He batted .303/.358/.457 for the Tigers in 2013 before getting hit with a 50-game PED suspension. The 31-year-old is said to be looking for a contract north of three years, $45 million.
Peralta reportedly seeking 'big-time money' | 11/13/2013 8:39 PM
NewsJhonny Peralta's representatives are said to be looking for a contract above three years and $45 million, according to ESPN's Buster Olney.
Buster Olney on Twitter
ImpactThe free agent market for shortstops isn't terribly deep or strong, so Peralta may get his wish. He had a strong year before being suspended for his connection to the Biogenesis clinic and isn't connected to a qualifying offer, making him one of the more attractive free agent options. The Mets have already been linked to the 31-year-old and more teams are likely to enter the discussion.
Mets 'clandestinely' meet with Jhonny Peralta | 11/13/2013 6:32 PM
NewsThe Mets had a secret meeting with free agent shortstop Jhonny Peralta during the winter meetings, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com.
ImpactThe Mets need help all over the diamond, so while it's a bit of a surprise it's not a complete shock that they would have interest in the 31-year-old. Peralta hit .303/.358/.457 in 2013 before missing 50 games due to a suspension for using performance-enhancing drugs. The Mets are also monitoring other shortstops aside from Peralta -- the team leaned on the likes of Ruben Tejada, Justin Turner and Omar Quintanilla at the position last year.
Tigers not interested in Peralta returning | 11/03/2013 5:49 PM
NewsTigers general manager Dave Dombrowski indicated Sunday that they don't plan on pursuing Jhonny Peralta this offseason.
Chris Iott on Twitter
ImpactPeralta has already publicly stated his desire to return to the Tigers, even if it means playing left field full-time, but it doesn't look like a reunion will be in the works. Despite missing 50 games due to his PED suspension, the 31-year-old infielder still had a solid season, slashing .303/.358/.457 with 11 homers and 55 RBI in 107 games. He should be able to land a starting gig as a shortstop or third baseman someplace else.
Peralta willing to return as OF with Tigers | 10/20/2013 3:20 PM
NewsImpending free agent Jhonny Peralta said that he wants to return to the Tigers even if it would mean playing left field.
Detroit Free Press
Impact"There's a chance for sure, yeah, because I like the organization here," Peralta said. "Do I want to be here? Yeah, I want to be here." While it's an interesting thought, Peralta's not a good bet to return, as Jose Iglesias is slated for everyday shortstop duty and Nick Castellanos should be ready for left field. Peralta figures to land elsewhere as a shortstop or third baseman.

Peralta ignited things with the two-out blast in the fifth and Detroit wound up plating eight on the night in the two-run victory. It was Peralta's first longball since August 3, which was two days before he began serving his PED suspension. Victor Martinez also had a big day for the Tigers, going 3-for-4 with a dinger of his own.

NewsJhonny Peralta returned to the Tigers lineup, going 1-for-4 with an RBI double in Friday's loss to the Marlins.
ImpactFresh off serving his 50-game suspension for the use of performance-enhancing drugs, Peralta showed little rust on his bat, smashing an RBI double to center off Marlins starter Tom Koehler in the sixth inning. His defensive work in left field was certainly shaky, but it appears as if he'll be a part of the Tigers plans in the postseason.

ImpactPeralta will rejoin the team Friday now that his 50-game suspension is over. However, since the club acquired Jose Iglesias to play shortstop, he's going to play left field. NewsTigers activated SS Jhonny Peralta from the restricted list.
ImpactPeralta's 50-game PED suspension is up, and the Tigers will use him over the final weekend and presumably on their NLDS roster. He's been working out in left field and is expected to see time there, though he could also play some shortstop with Jose Iglesias (finger) injured.

ImpactThe Tigers are committed to the defensive whiz Jose Iglesias as their starting shortstop, so they want Peralta to build a little last-minute versatility before he returns from his 50-game PED suspension. NewsJhonny Peralta continued to take fly balls in left field on Friday, indicating that he could be used there once returning from his 50-game suspension.
ImpactTigers general manager Dave Dombrowski has yet to decide whether Peralta will be added to the roster once his suspension is served, but it's looking increasingly likely. The Tigers have already stated that even if he does return, that Jose Iglesias will remain the regular shortstop, so Peralta could be used in a utility role, including seeing time in left field against left-handed starters.

ImpactGeneral manager Dave Dombrowski said that no decision has been made as to whether Peralta will be added to the roster once his suspension is served, but this would seem to be an indication that the odds are good. With Jose Iglesias settling in at shortstop, Peralta would be used in a utility role. The shortstop will be eligible to return for the final three games of the regular season, as well as the playoffs.
Tigers haven't made decision on Peralta | 08/30/2013 5:26 PM
NewsTigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said Friday that the club hasn't made a decision whether to welcome Jhonny Peralta back for the postseason.
ImpactPeralta was suspended 50 games in August for his involvement with Biogenesis, but he is eligible to return for the final three games of the regular season and the postseason. Still, the Tigers haven't given any indication that he'll be welcomed back. "We have not made any decisions on Jhonny's situation to date," said Dombrowski. ImpactHe finished 2-for-5. The 31-year-old is now batting .305 and is on pace for 16 homer and 83 RBI. Peralta's unfortunate connection to the Biogenesis clinic isn't likely to affect fantasy owners this season, as we would expect him to appeal a potential suspension while the Tigers fight for a playoff spot.
Peralta homers in Tigers' 6-2 win over Sox | 07/24/2013 12:51 AM
NewsJhonny Peralta went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in the Tigers' 6-2 win over the White Sox on Tuesday.
ImpactPeralta singled in a run in the fourth inning before adding a solo blast in the sixth off White Sox starter Hector Santiago. The shortstop now has nine home runs and 48 RBI to go with a .303 batting average. His possible connection to the Biogenesis clinic is worrisome for owners of the 31-year-old, but it's hard to see him not appealing any potential suspension while the Tigers are in the hunt for a playoff spot.

Peralta's homer was his first since June 1, but he had collected eight doubles since that date. His current .329 average is 90 points ahead of where he finished last year.

NewsJhonny Peralta went 2-for-4 with a homer in the Tigers' 10-6 win over the Yankees on Saturday.
ImpactWe're not expecting all that much of a rebound from Peralta after last year's disappointing campaign, but he should be good for a few more RBI with Delmon Young out of the way this year. Then again, he has just three RBI in 48 at-bats this spring, two of those coming on his homers.

"I worked [out] in the Dominican Republic," said Peralta. "I have a strength trainer over there, and I'm working really hard this year to be how I've been [in the past]. I've lost about 20 pounds. He is the 12th player overall and the fifth client of Seth and Sam Levinson's ACES agency to be connected to the clinic records, joining Nelson Cruz, Gio Gonzalez, Jesus Montero and Melky Cabrera. Peralta and Montero both do not appear to be directly tied to PEDs, though.
Jhonny Peralta loses 18 pounds | 02/01/2013 9:26 AM
NewsJhonny Peralta has lost 18 pounds so far this offseason in an effort to improve his range at shortstop.
Impact"It's good," Peralta said. "I've never been at this weight since I've been with Detroit. I finished last season at 236. I'm at 218 now. (Tigers general manager Dave) Dombrowski and everybody wanted me working on my range. That's why I tried to get lighter. So I can be quicker, especially up the middle." Peralta has made only 14 errors over the last two seasons, but his range has been among the worst in baseball at short, so losing some extra pounds probably won't hurt. Fantasy owners are more concerned about the career-low .689 OPS he had last season.
