Anibal Sanchez not sharp in Game 5 loss | 10/18/2013 12:12 AM
NewsAnibal Sanchez was charged with four runs -- three earned -- on nine hits over six innings in Thursday's loss to the Red Sox.
ImpactSanchez attacked the plate more than he did in Game 1, not walking a single batter after issuing six free passes over the weekend. The Red Sox had no trouble squaring him up, though, as four of their nine hits went for extra bases. He struck out five Thursday after whiffing 12 in Game 1. All Sanchez can do now is sit and wait, hoping he gets another shot in the World Series. The Tigers turn to Max Scherzer in Game 6.

Al Alburquerque, Jose Veras and Drew Smyly kept the no-no going through the bottom of the eighth, but closer Joaquin Benoit gave up a Daniel Nava one-out single in the bottom of the ninth. Detroit leads the best-of-seven 1-0. Game 2 is at Fenway Park on Sunday night.

NewsTigers manager Jim Leyland has named Anibal Sanchez his ALCS Game 1 starter.

ImpactMax Scherzer probably could have come back on three days' rest after throwing two relief innings Tuesday, but Leyland has decided not to push him. Sanchez really struggled in Game 3 of the ALDS but, of course, led the AL in ERA during the regular season. Leyland wouldn't reveal his rotation beyond Game 1, but Scherzer will surely get Game 2 and Justin Verlander Game 3. The Red Sox will send Jon Lester to the hill in Game 1.
