Filppula benefiting from Stamkos injury | 11/17/2013 1:35 AM
NewsValtteri Filppula is really benefiting from Steven Stamkos' injury as most of the stats have pointed towards an increase.
ImpactFilppula operated at a 0.71 point and 1.4 shots on goal per game rate while appearing in 46.8 percent of the Lightning's power-play opportunities prior to the Stamkos injury. In three contests since Stamkos' absence, Filppula is operating at the point-per-game rate as well as averaging 3.7 shots on goal per contest. The biggest boost is that he now appears in 73.8 percent of TB's power-play chances, which will significantly boost his fantasy value moving forward. He's just 44 percent Yahoo! owned currently, and would be a great waiver wire snag if you're looking for a boost in your fantasy lineup.

Valtteri Filppula signing has paid off so far | 11/10/2013 9:31 AM
NewsSo far Valtteri Filppula is a gamble that's paid off for the Tampa Bay Lightning.
ImpactTampa Bay Lightning GM Steve Yzerman took some heat when he inked Filppula to a five-year/$25 million contract over the summer. Filppula recorded 66 points in 2011-12, but he never recorded more than 40 points prior to that and he struggled in the shortened campaign. Still, he has six goals and 12 points in 16 games with Tampa Bay. "I can't say enough about his versatility and what he has brought to our team," Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. "I have to give a lot of credit to Steve (Yzerman) and the scouting staff because I wasn't sure what we were getting when he came in. And for us it's a home run. He's been a home run."
Filppula excited for Saturday's game in Det. | 11/09/2013 11:38 AM
NewsValtteri Filppula is excited to be returning to play in Detroit for the first time as a visiting player.
ImpactFilppula was with the Red Wings for eight seasons and played in 438 games registering 100 goals and 251 points before signing with the Lightgning as a free agent over the summer. He has fond memories of playing in Detroit, especially the Stanley Cup win in 2007-08. He is off to a strong start with Tampa registering 12 points in 15 games and certainly wants to make a statement Saturday night. "It"s definitely going to be an interesting game for the team, and personally as well," Filppula said. "I spent a lot of time there, I have a lot of good friends on that team, a lot of good memories. It's probably going to be a little weird to play as the away team at that rink." We'd start Filpuula Saturday. He will have plenty of jump to his game.
V. Filppula OK after tweaking 'something' | 10/19/2013 3:09 PM
NewsValtteri Filppula is expected to play Saturday night after getting a maintenance day Friday.
St. Petersburg Times
ImpactCoach Jon Cooper said Filppula "tweaked something" Thursday, but there is "no cause for alarm." He simply sat Friday's skate as a precaution. Filppula has picked up four goals and two assists in seven games with the Lightning.
Valtteri Filppula comes out strong for Tampa | 10/14/2013 10:37 AM
NewsValtteri Filppula has enjoyed a great start with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Valtteri Filppula nets deciding goal in SO | 10/06/2013 10:46 AM
NewsValtteri Filppula scored the game-winning goal in Tampa Bay's 3-2 shootout win over Chicago.
ImpactFilppula previously netted the Lightning's lone goal in their 3-1 loss to the Boston Bruins. His solid start to the season should help take a bit of the pressure off after he signed a five-year/$25 million contract over the summer. That was, and remains, a big gamble for the Lightning given that Filppula has only recorded more than 40 points once in his career.
Valtteri Filppula scores in Lightning debut | 10/03/2013 10:07 PM
NewsValtteri Filppula scored the only Lightning goal in a 3-1 loss to Boston Thursday night.
ImpactPlaying on a line with Alex Killorn and Teddy Purcell, Filppula found the back of the net in his first game with Tampa Bay. While his fantasy prospects would be better served by a permanent role alongside the team's top guns, the Finnish forward should be a good source of depth scoring for a team in great need of it.
Valtteri Filppula's style lacks shots | 09/25/2013 8:23 AM
NewsValtteri Filppula has four assists in three preseason games, but he's been credited with only two shots.
St. Petersburg Times
ImpactA common criticism he received as a member of the Detroit Red Wings was that he didn't shoot enough. Despite being aware of the issue, Filppula is still a pass-first player which hasn't meshed well with his pass-happy linemate Teddy Purcell. However, the Bolts are happy that Filppula can play well defensively so they don't want him to alter his style too much. Still, a few more shots would help his tarnished fantasy value.
Valtteri Filppula powers Lightning to win | 09/20/2013 10:43 PM
NewsValtteri Filppula dished out three assists for the Lightning in a 4-3 preseason win over St. Louis Friday night.
ImpactFilppula signed a free agent deal with Tampa Bay in the offseason after the Red Wings chose to move in a different direction. Brett Connolly, Artem Sergeev, Pierre-Cedric Labrie and Ondrej Palat scored for the Bolts while goaltending duties were shared between Anders Lindback and Ben Bishop. Jaroslav Halak played the entire game and allowed four goals on 23 shots while the Blues received offensive contributions from Corey Locke, T.J. Oshie and Alexander Steen.
Filppula wants to avoid Lecavalier contrast | 09/16/2013 11:07 AM
NewsValtteri Filppula isn't worried about trying to be Vincent Lecavalier.
St. Petersburg Times
Impact"I'm not really thinking about it," said Filppula, who was signed shortly after the Lightning bought out Lecavalier. "I can't control if people think I'm here to replace him. I'm just trying to play how I play and focus on myself and not try to control things I can't control." Filppula is slated to be Tampa's second-line center, but the two of them play different styles. Coach Jon Cooper likes Filppula's versatility because he thinks the center can produce if he's placed with scorers and he can play a more defensive style if he skates with checkers.
Valtteri Filppula wants to move on from 2013 | 09/08/2013 12:33 PM
NewsValtteri Filppula is eager to put his shaky 2013 campaign behind him.
ImpactFilppula went from recording 66 points in 2011-12 to just nine goals and eight assists in 41 games last season. "It was just one of those seasons that I had some issues," Filppula said. "But hopefully it's going to be a season that I can stay healthy." Despite his poor showing, the Lightning showed him a lot of trust by signing him to a five-year/$25 million contract as an unrestricted free agent.
Bolts GM likes Filppula's two-way game | 08/21/2013 3:49 PM
NewsTampa Bay GM Steve Yzerman didn't sign Valtteri Filppula with the expectation that he'll fill the hole left by the buyout of Vincent Lecavalier.
Impact"Val is a totally different type of player than Vinny," said Yzerman, who is familiar with Filppula from their time in Detroit. "He's a good, solid, all-around complete player who checks and wins faceoffs. We can score goals, but we need to become a better defensive team, and Val is the type of player who can play that game, in all those situations." Filppula is slated to serve as the team's second-line center with Lecavalier gone.
Valtteri Filppula now Bolts' No. 2 center | 07/06/2013 11:33 AM
NewsWith Valtteri Filppula in the fold, the Lightning have brought in their second-line center with Viny Lecavalier gone.
Impact"We feel he is an outstanding, all-around centerman who brings a winning pedigree to our organization," general manager Steve Yzerman said. "He fills a much-needed position for us at center and his skill, work ethic and character will make him a great addition to our team." Filppula had a disappointing year with nine goals and 17 points, but he's a year removed from a 66-point campaign.
Lightning sign V. Filppula to five-year deal | 07/05/2013 3:12 PM
NewsValtteri Filppula has agreed to a five-year/$25 million contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Bob McKenzie on Twitter
ImpactThis is certainly a big risk for the Lightning. He had 23 goals and 66 points in 81 games in 2011-12, but none of his other seasons even come close to those totals. Last season he fell back to Earth hard with just eight goals and 17 points in 41 contests. He should be counted on to get at least 40 points per season, but he's not a safe bet to replicate his 2011-12 numbers.
Filppula, Red Wings likely to part ways | 07/03/2013 10:31 AM
NewsValtteri Filppula and the Detroit Red Wings haven't made much progress in their contract negotiations.
ImpactIt seems likely at this point that Filppula will become an unrestricted free agent, but Detroit hasn't given up yet. "One call can change everything," said Red Wings GM Ken Holland. "I've been around long enough to know that. We'll see what develops. Is Fil going to hit the market? I don't know that." Filppula is coming off of a rough season where he scored nine goals and 17 points in 41 games.
Filppula still a Red Wing | 07/01/2013 11:11 AM
NewsIf the Red Wings tried to trade pending unrestricted free agent Valtteri Filppula this past weekend, they weren't too successful.
ImpactThe Wings don't want to part with Filppula but the talented forward may be looking to cash in as a free agent and demand a salary beyond what Detroit can afford. That said, GM Ken Holland intends to do what he can to re-sign the winger. Holland will also focus on re-signing other pending UFAs Damien Brunner and Daniel Cleary, although it seems progress with all three players has been slow. Stay tuned. There is a chance that any of these players could re-sign or be traded.
Wings might have tough time trading Filppula | 06/29/2013 1:47 PM
NewsThe Detroit Red Wings might have a difficult time trading the rights to Valtteri Filppula.
Detroit Free Press
ImpactFilppula is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent and it sounds like he's planning on testing the market. With that in mind, teams might be reluctant to give Detroit anything more than a conditional pick for his services. He had nine goals and 17 points in 41 games last season.
Report: Filppula's rights likely to be dealt | 06/25/2013 2:18 PM
NewsThe Detroit Red Wings are expected to trade Valtteri Filppula's rights if they can't sign him to a new contract, according to beat writer Ansar Khan.
ImpactThe Red Wings and Filppula's camp are having difficulty coming to terms on an extension for the pending UFA. Filppula is believed to be looking for a contract in the range of $5 million per year, which Detroit is unlikely to pay. If they do trade him, it would likely be for a conditional draft pick dependent on the other team signing Filppula to a long-term deal before July 5.
Expect Valtteri Filppula to become UFA | 06/23/2013 6:27 AM
NewsIt appears that Valtteri Filppula will become an unrestricted free agent on July 5.
ImpactThe Red Wings already have 14 forwards under contract and still want to sign Damien Brunner to a contract so Filppula is likely headed towards free agency. The Red Wings do not want to pay him $5 million annually but there is likely some NHL team that is looking for a top-two center. Filppula was outstanding offensively in 2011-12 with 23 goals and 66 points but struggled in 2013 with only nine goals and 17 points in 41 games. There are not a lot of centers available in free agency so Filppula could find himself with some suitors during free agent frenzy.
Kronwall hopes Wings re-sign Filppula | 06/16/2013 4:59 PM
NewsNiklas Kronwall hopes the Red Wings re-sign soon-to-be unrestricted free agent Valtteri Filppula.
Detroit Free Press
Impact"Fil's one of those guys that you don't want to lose," Kronwall said. "He's a puck possession guy, a real good player and a great person, really good in the room, works hard. He has all the tools. Hopefully we'll be able to keep him." Filppula struggled in 2013 with just nine goals and 17 points in 41 games. Given that he reportedly wants about $5 million annually, Detroit might end up letting him go.
Filppula probably won't re-sign with Wings | 06/06/2013 10:05 AM
NewsValtteri Filppula isn't likely to play for the Detroit Red Wings next season.
Detroit Free Press
ImpactDetroit, which tends to take a conservative approach to managing their salary cap, aren't likely to meet his reported demands of around $5 million annually. That's not unreasonable given that Filppula had just 17 points in 41 games in 2013, but he might still command that much on the open market where the talent pool is thin.
Filppula: Leaving Wings is a possibility | 05/31/2013 5:41 PM
NewsValtteri Filppula doesn't know if he'll end up signing elsewhere over the summer.
Impact"I don't know, it's too early to say right now," said Filppula. "It's been the only team I've played with. There's nothing but positive things to say (about the organization), and it's a great place to be. We'll see what happens this summer. I haven't thought too much about it. Possibly it (leaving the Red Wings) could happen. It would be tough." How much he demands will be a factor. Earlier reports suggested he was looking for more than $5 million per season, but the cap conscious Red Wings might bulk at that price after he recorded just 17 points in 41 games this season.
Filppula to need four-eight weeks to recover | 05/31/2013 6:06 AM
NewsValtteri Filppula will need four-eight weeks to recover from his high-ankle sprain suffered in Game 7 Wednesday.
ImpactThe Red Wings were eliminated so Filppula will be ready for the start of training camp in September. He is slated to become an unrestricted free agent on July 5 and while the Red Wings would like to re-sign him, his value could skyrocket as there are not a lot of good free agents available this off-season. Filppula struggled this season with nine goals and 17 points in 41 games but did have 23 goals and 66 points in 2011-12 so he is capable of plenty of offense.

Babcock: Filppula needs to be 'huge' vs. CHI | 05/14/2013 9:42 AM
NewsDetroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock says Valtteri Filppula needs to be a "huge factor" against the Chicago Blackhawks.
Detroit Free Press
ImpactFilppula, who is slated for free agency this summer, had one goal and four points in seven first-round games but also had some bad giveaways, particularly on a Game 6 goal by Emerson Etem. Due to the Hawks' great depth, the Red Wings need Filppula to be one of their best players without having to play alongside Henrik Zetterberg.
Valtteri Filuppa has only 3 points in 16 game | 04/22/2013 8:49 AM
NewsValtteri Filppula has only three points in his last 16 games.
Detroit Free Press
ImpactFilppula is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent but he is certainly not helping his situation with his lack of scoring. He has seven goals and 15 points in 37 games after a 23 goal, 66 point effort in 2012-13.

NewsValtteri Filppula is having a hard time generating points this season.
ImpactHe has just 14 points in 32 games this season. "Definitely, I feel like I've been playing a lot and getting lots of chances, but it hasn't been going in this year," Filppula said. "Obviously, there are still some games left and we're fighting for a playoff spot. So, hopefully I can do more to help the team." Filppula is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this season and it's believed he's looking for more than $5 million per season. That'll be hard to get if he doesn't at least end the season on a positive note.

NewsValtteri Filppula netted a power-play goal in Detroit's 4-2 defeat.
ImpactFilppula also had a minus-two rating, dropping him to minus-six over his last four games. Detroit's been struggling lately, but even still, Filppula's plus/minus rating is among the worst on the team. He also has taken a step back offensively this season with just 14 points in 30 games.
Filppula, Wings still working on extension | 04/04/2013 9:44 AM
NewsValtteri Filppula and the Detroit Red Wings are still talking about a contract extension.
ImpactFilppula, who is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, expressed an interest in staying with Detroit, but an earlier report suggests he's looking fore more than $5 million a season. The Red Wings might bulk at that price, especially when you factor in his struggles this season. He has just 13 points in 29 games in 2013.

NewsValtteri Filppula can become an unrestricted free agent this summer and according to a report from Mlive.com, the two sides aren't close to a new contract.
ImpactFilppula is reportedly seeking more than $5 million a season, which would be a steep price to pay especially given his struggles this season. He has recorded just five goals and 11 points in 20 games. He is currently making $3.5 million and his salary cap hit is $3 million.

ImpactFilppula has missed the last seven games with the injury. He has not had a good season as he has only four goals and 10 points in 19 games after a 66 point season in 2011-12. What has been most disconcerting is that he has played 58:10 minutes of power play time and not only does he not have a point, he has not been on the ice for a power play goal.
Valtteri Filppula struggled in first half | 03/09/2013 9:21 AM
NewsAmidst the injury troubles he has suffered through, Red Wings' Valtteri Filppula has struggled offensively this season.
ImpactThe pending unrestricted free agent has scored only four goals and six assists in 19 games, which is a far cry from the pace he set for himself with 66 points last year. There's always time for a rebound, but the anomalous shooting percentage he posted during his career year makes it seem that may be the high-water mark for his career.
