Detroit Free Press
ImpactHe is having a terrible time recovering from December sports hernia surgery and will likely not be able to do any serious training for at least another month. The Red Wings are concerned that if Weiss is not able to start getting into shape soon, he may not be ready for training camp in September. "We're going to continue to look for answers to why is he not getting healthy," Detroit GM Ken Holland said. "It's hard to know where he's going to be in September. A lot of where he's going to be in September is really going to be about, is he going to be able to ... have a June, July and August where he's able to hit the gym and come to camp healthy, fit, ready to go." "You go from feeling terrible to skating not long after that. I was walking on a treadmill about 10 days ago and now I've been on the ice five days in a row. It progresses pretty quickly." ImpactJohan Franzen, Daniel Alfredsson and Gustav Nyquist appear to be the frontrunners, while Todd Bertuzzi and Mikael Samuelsson could also land top-six spots if they are healthy. With Weiss in the fold, Detroit coach Mike Babcock may decide to keep Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg on the same line this year. GM Ken Holland is counting on Alfredsson and Weiss to help improve the team's scoring potential. "We felt we had some needs we wanted to fill," Holland said. "We wanted to get more scoring. We were challenged last season to score some goals."
Panthers budget prevents big spending | 07/07/2013 9:55 AM
NewsThe Florida Panthers budget constraints are likely to blame for the departure of many top players to free agency.
ImpactCenter Stephen Weiss signed a lucrative five-year contract with the Red Wings while Florida has remained relatively quiet through the free agent frenzy thus far. "We have a budget, and we have a budget we have to stick with," said Florida GM Dale Tallon. "That's what the mandate is. It's all in the budget. So, that's what we're doing." With a large group of young talented players in its system, the Panthers are hoping they can remain competitive without spending much more than the salary cap floor.

ImpactHe agreed to a five-year, $24.9 million deal. "It was a pretty easy decision to come and play for Mr. (Ken) Holland and Mr. (Mike) Babcock and the Red Wings organization," said Weiss. "It's been a culture of winning over the years. Their goal every year is to win a Stanley Cup." Weiss made the playoffs one time in his 10 years with the Panthers. He'll slide in as the Wings' number-two center.

Red Wings interested in Stephen Weiss | 07/04/2013 8:06 AM
NewsHelene St. James of the Detroit Free Press is reporting that the Detroit Red Wings are interested in center Stephen Weiss.
Detroit Free Press
ImpactWeiss has spent his whole career in Florida with the Panthers but had his season come to a halt when required season-ending wrist surgery after scoring a goal and four points in 17 games. The Red Wings would use him as a second line center if he signs on, allowing them to put Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg on the same line. With free agency starting Friday, it should be an interesting day.
Panthers in talks with pending UFA Weiss | 06/29/2013 7:42 PM
NewsThe Florida Panthers are negotiating with Stephen Weiss in the hopes of inking him before he becomes an unrestricted free agent.
Impact"We're trying to get something done," Panthers GM Dale Tallon said. "You only get one shot at being a free agent and we're trying to do the best we can for both parties. If I can come up with the right number, well, that's fine. We'll go through [Sunday] and then make a decision next week." Weiss had four points and 25 penalty minutes in just 17 games last season. Before that he had recorded between 49 and 61 points in each of his previous four campaigns.
Leafs consider Stephen Weiss vs. Tyler Bozak | 06/23/2013 8:56 AM
NewsIt is believed the Maple Leafs are looking at free agent center Stephen Weiss as a potential replacement for Tyler Bozak.
ImpactBozak is also an unrestricted free agent this summer and is rumored to be seeking $5.5 million per season, a price Toronto is unlikely to pay. The contract demands for Weiss are not known, but given his recent injury history he can probably be signed for significantly less money if the team is willing to take on the additional risk. Working in Weiss's favor is the fact he has been fairly productive when healthy, save for his most recent campaign in Florida.
Report: Wings interested in Stephen Weiss | 06/17/2013 10:02 AM
NewsThe Wings are taking a very close look at the Panthers' Stephen Weiss.
The Detroit News
ImpactAccording to Elliotte Friedman on "Hockey Night in Canada," the team has "inquired on the rights" to the center. The Stars and Maple Leafs have also asked the Panthers about Weiss. The 30-year-old will be an unrestricted free agent on July 5 and is coming off a a season in which he notched a goal and three assists in 17 games. He is a four-time 20-goal scorer, however.
Predators could target Stephen Weiss as FA | 05/07/2013 10:35 AM
NewsJosh Cooper of The Tennessean speculates the Predators could target Stephen Weiss in free agency this summer.
ImpactWeiss was struggling offensively before undergoing wrist surgery in March but is generally regarded as one of the best two-way centers in the NHL. That would fit coach Barry Trotz's style quite well, but, unfortunately for Nashville, there's been talk from both the Panthers and Weiss' camp that he'd prefer to re-sign with the Panthers. If Weiss isn't an option, Cooper also mentioned Derek Roy and Nathan Horton as potential targets up front with Sergei Gonchar as an option on the blue line.
Weiss, Panthers interested in new deal | 04/29/2013 11:18 AM
NewsStephen Weiss has had the cast from his surgically repaired wrist removed.
Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel
ImpactWeiss said there's mutual interest between him and the team to agree to a new contract in the off-season. "The consensus is they'd like to have me back; I'd like to be back, it's just a matter of the numbers game." Weiss will become an unrestricted free agent in July if a deal isn't reached to stay in Florida.
Stephen Weiss hopes to be back with Panthers | 03/06/2013 3:14 PM
NewsStephen Weiss would like to re-sign with the Florida Panthers.
Impact"You know what? It would be awesome to finish my career here," he said. "I've been here for a long time. You don't see that too often nowadays, guys staying with one team for a long time. So that would be great. But saying that, first of all, are they going to want me back? And if they do, those will be decisions that I'm going to make here at some point. I'm going to look at all the options and decide what I feel is best for me moving forward. That's about it." He is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. GM Dale Tallon said previously that he wanted to wait until Weiss was healthy before discussing the possibility of a new contract. Now, Weiss is slated to miss the rest of the year following wrist surgery so it's unclear how that will impact any possible negotiations. He has been bothered by the ailment since last season and he had surgery on the same wrist following the 2008-09 campaign.
Cats' Weiss battled wrist issue for a while | 03/06/2013 10:56 AM
NewsStephen Weiss (wrist) refused to make injuries an excuse for his poor start this season, but teammate Tomas Kopecky admitted that the club was aware that Weiss could hardly grip his stick.
Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel
Impact"We knew even from the beginning of the year that he always had that problem," Kopecky said. "It's tough on him and it's tough on us as a team. He was our leader, he always sets an example. It's a big hole to fill." Weiss generated just one goal, two assists and a horrid minus-13 rating in 17 games. He is expected to be out for the remainder of the season following wrist surgery.
Stephen Weiss needs surgery on wonky wrist | 03/05/2013 12:15 PM
NewsStephen Weiss will need season ending wrist surgery according to GM Dale Tallon.
Florida Panthers on Twitter
ImpactThat is not good news for the center as he will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. He struggled mightily this season and his wonky wrist likely had plenty to do with it. It looks like he will end his Florida career with only one goal, four points and an NHL worst minus-13 in only 17 games.
Stephen Weiss struggling mightily | 03/01/2013 10:43 AM
NewsStephen Weiss has one goal in his last 15 games.
ImpactNot the kind of production you want from a top-six player. Weiss has only four points on the season, and he's seen himself resigned to the bench at times -- such as against Boston two games ago. "It's never fun to be sat, and the easy answer is to play better. That's the bottom line,'' he said.

Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel

ImpactWeiss told coach Kevin Dineen about the passing of his grandmother after Sunday's match with Boston and was granted permission to head home. "The hockey season is condensed this year, but it doesn't stop life," Dineen said. "These things are always hard to deal with, family loss. We always want a player to be with family if possible."
Stephen Weiss gets benched during 3rd period | 02/24/2013 7:47 PM
NewsFlorida Panthers head coach Kevin Dineen benched Stephen Weiss for all but two shifts in the team's 4-1 loss to the Boston Bruins.
ImpactWeiss has had an awful season so far, managing just four points and 19 SOG with a putrid -11 rating in 14 games played. It's hard to deny the trade rumors at this point, although his value might be at an all-time low.
Weiss won't pass the blame for poor start | 02/18/2013 7:20 PM
NewsStephen Weiss doesn't want to use the trade rumors surrounding him as an excuse for his mediocre play.
Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel
Impact"No, it's not something I think about," Weiss said. "I have a no-move clause anyway, so I can't get traded without the team coming to me first if they wanted to do that. But that definitely doesn't bother me." Weiss has four points and a minus-nine rating in 10 games this season. He also dealt with a groin injury earlier this season, but he doesn't want to blame that either. At any rate, he should get better as the campaign progresses.
Stephen Weiss might be playing hurt | 02/17/2013 10:20 AM
NewsFlorida Panthers' coach Kevin Dineen inplied that Stephen Weiss has been playing hurt this season.
ImpactWith only one goal and four points in 10 games, Weiss has struggled thus far in this shortened 48-game season."The physical side of it is something you're always trying to stay on top of and stay aware. He's got a big heart and he's going to come out and play every night. That's a factor. Stephen is a guy I rely on and we rely on a lot in so many different situations and over the course of my tenure here and his career I think it's an area he's embraced as the go-to-guy. For the first couple of weeks here it hasn't gone as planned, but with a guy like Stephen I know that worm's going to turn here,'' said coach Dineen.
Panthers reunite top line at practice Monday | 02/12/2013 9:23 AM
NewsStephen Weiss was reunited with Tomas Fleichmann and Kris Versteeg at Monday's practice.
Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel
ImpactThe trio provided the vast majority of the team's offense last season, but they have struggled to get it going so far this year. Weiss and Versteeg have scored a goal and two assists each in seven and six games, respectively. Fleichmann has had a bit more success with nine points in 11 contests.

NewsStephen Weiss is encouraged by how Florida is playing now.
ImpactAfter losing to the Flyers 7-1 at the end of January, the Panthers came back and ended up winning in a shootout Thursday. They've now won three of four, with points in all four. "It's not about payback. It's about competing, having a better effort. We need the points. It wasn't about what they did to us. It's about climbing back into the playoff race. We didn't have the start we wanted, but we're starting to build something.''

NewsStephen Weiss attempted to skate on his own Monday, but the look on his face suggested that he wasn't ready to return from what is believed to be a groin injury.
Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel

"He had been a little tender for a couple days," Dineen said. "You always test how you feel and if it's heading in the right direction. I don't think it was. He needed to step back and start feeling healthy. Weiss in particular has struggled thus far in this shortened 48-game season.

ImpactFlorida GM Dale Tallon believes his top center has a minor lower-body injury, but his absence left an already depleted roster without another important forward. Weiss joins Kris Versteeg (groin), Sean Bergenheim (groin) and Marcel Goc (ankle) on the sidelines. Consider him day-to-day for now.
Florida's top line struggles without Versteeg | 01/24/2013 10:52 AM
NewsStephen Weiss and Tomas Fleischmann have had trouble getting going early into this season.
Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel
ImpactThe two of them have three assists and no goals between them three contests into the 2013 campaign. The third member of their productive trio from last year, Kris Versteeg, hasn't been able to play yet in the abbreviated season because of a lower-body injury and it has seemingly had an adverse effect on the Panthers' top line. Weiss in particular has struggled thus far with no shots and one assist after three contests.
Panthers GM has championship expectations | 01/11/2013 11:10 AM
NewsPanthers general manager Dale Tallon has championship expectations.
Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel
ImpactFlorida went from last place in the East to Southeast Division champions last season. "We gave [the fans] good value last year and that's what we hope to do this year,'' Tallon said. "We believe in them, hopefully, they believe in us, and we're going to win some hockey games and win a championship.''
Weiss not concerned with expiring contract | 01/08/2013 12:26 PM
NewsStephen Weiss isn't concerning himself with his expiring contract yet.
Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel
Impact"That's the last thing on my mind," he said after Monday's practice session at the Glacier Ice and Snow Arena in Lighthouse Point. "It's getting back with the guys on the ice and trying to win some hockey games. That's my focus and I'll deal with my contract stuff when that comes up at the end of the season." He has played his entire 637-game career with the Panthers and could hit unrestricted free agency this summer if a deal isn't reached. That is probably another reason why Weiss' name has come up in the rumor mill as a possible piece to land Roberto Luongo from Vancouver.
