6-1.5 190 US Nat'l Team (U18) 47 6 10 16 41 -
Scouting Report: McBain greatly improved his draft stock by finishing second in overall scoring with Team USA at the 2006 World under-18 tournament in Sweden. The defenseman's nine assists topped all tourney players, while his 11 points was one shy of teammate Pat Kane's mark... will join fellow USNTDP members Nigel Williams and Blake Geoffrion at the University of Wisconsin in 2006-07... owns good size and outstanding offensive potential... needs to work on his defensive coverage and must cut down on the number of bad penalties he routinely takes... projects to become a power-play quarterback at the highest level.

Impact: Carolina's first selection of the draft was a little confusing in that they drafted McBain a lot higher than expected. Eventually, he should play a role along the Hurricanes blueline because of his offensive potential--something the team may eventually need.
R3/93 Harrison Reed, RW
  2005-06 Stats
HT WT Team GP G A Pts PIM +/-
6-0.5 178 Sarnia (OHL) 68 26 24 50 50 -31
Scouting Report: Among OHL rookie scorers, Reed finished fifth overall with 26 goals and 50 points. He also finished fourth on the Sting's scoring list in 2005-06... owns plenty of scoring potential, but will need to add significant strength in order to thrive at the NHL level...

Impact: There's a little Justin Williams in Reed's game, so it makes sense that the Stanley Cup champs took a flyer on the OHLer. The Hurricanes will be very patient with Reed, with the hope he too can one day make an impact in the NHL's postseason.
R4/123 Bobby Hughes, C
  2005-06 Stats
HT WT Team GP G A Pts PIM +/-
5-10.5 170 Kingston (OHL) 56 35 40 75 47 9
Scouting Report: Hughes placed fourth on the Frontenacs in scoring in 2005-06 (75 points in 56 games), behind fellow 2006 draft hopefuls Cory Emmerton and Chris Stewart--as well as Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Radek Smolenak... possesses above-average skating ability and sound two-way instincts... likes to lay on the body, despite his smallish frame... may project better as a third-line energy player than a top-six forward... is similar in style and stature to Buffalo Sabres center Derek Roy, but may not own the same scoring upside... possesses leadership qualities that enhance his draft stock...
