Ray Emery, G, Philadelphia Flyers
2010/02/09: Ray Emery had an MRI on his sore left hip on Monday. There is a report that Emery has a torn labrum and may require surgery, but nothing has been confirmed. Emery has already gone under the knife once this season to repair an abdominal injury. GM Paul Holmgren said that the Flyers are still waiting on the results of the MRI, but he said Emery might be fine in the short term. "Is it something where down the road we need to address this surgically? We need to get a feel of where he's at right now," Holmgren said. "We all seem to think he's going to be fine for the short term, anyway. We'll have a better idea about the long term after we get the results." Holmgren suggested that Emery could be ready to play between the pipes on Wednesday. We'll keep you posted. (Source: Philadelphia Inquirer ) |

Anssi Salmela, D, New Jersey Devils
2010/02/09: Anssi Salmela almost certainly has a concussion after being taken off the ice on a stretcher in the second period of Monday's game. Salmela was hit in the head during a shoulder check by Philadelphia's Jeff Carter. Salmela scored a shorthanded goal around the same time as the hit, but he initially couldn't remember. "I didn't remember at first," Salmela said. "Now I remember a little more clearly. Maybe I have to watch it. I think I shot it at the same time (of the hit), so I didn't see (the goal)." Samela admitted that it is "kind of scary" to not remember everything, but he said he thinks he's okay other than a headache. Salmela is expected to be re-evaluated on Tuesday. We'll keep you posted. Ilya Kovalchuk, LW, New Jersey Devils
2010/02/09: Ilya Kovalchuk had a game-high nine shots on Monday, but nothing to show for it. Kovalchuk also took eight shots on Saturday, but was held scoreless. He has no goals and two assists in three games with the Devils. "He's trying so much to score and he's squeezing the stick a little bit," coach Jacques Lemaire said. "He's so anxious to contribute the way he can, by scoring goals, but his game is fine. It's just a matter of time that he's going to feel better and get better shots." It shouldn't be long before Kovalchuk scores his first goal in a Devils' uniform and then he should start to relax a bit. (Source: The Bergen Record) |

Tomas Plekanec, C, Montreal Canadiens
2010/02/09: New Canadiens GM Pierre Gauthier has talked to Tomas Plekanec's agent about a possible contract extension. Plekanec leads the Canadiens with 58 points in 60 games, but he's scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. Montreal would like to retain his services, but they already have $44.8 million committed to 12 players in 2010-11. Montreal also has to deal with restricted free agents Carey Price, Jaroslav Halak, and Benoit Pouliot and find a way to keep the team under a cap that's expected to dip below $56.8 million. Montreal has their work cut out for them if they want to keep Plekanec. (Source: Montreal Gazette) |

Carey Price, G, Montreal Canadiens
2010/02/09: New Canadiens GM Pierre Gauthier doesn't seem interested in trading Carey Price or Jaroslav Halak in the near future. Halak and Price are both scheduled to become restricted free agents this summer, so the thought was that Montreal might trade one of them to make their goaltending situation work from a cap perspective. "We have two excellent young goaltenders," Gauthier said. "They both want to be No. 1 and there will be a time when they may be with different teams, but it's not now." (Source: Montreal Gazette) |

Cory Stillman, LW, Florida Panthers
2010/02/09: Cory Stillman will play on the Panthers' first line on Tuesday. Stillman will play alongside David Booth and Stephen Weiss. Coach Pete DeBoer is shuffling the lines in an effort to snap the Panthers' out of their current scoring slump. Stillman has 10 goals and 24 points in 38 games this season. (Source: Miami Herald) |

Michael Frolik, RW/LW, Florida Panthers
2010/02/09: Michael Frolik will play on the Panthers' third line on Tuesday. Frolik was playing on Florida's top line, but he hasn't scored a goal since January 13th and he has just three assists in his last 11 games. The Panthers as a team haven't been much better, scoring just 12 goals in their last 10 games. Coach Pete DeBoer is hoping that mixing up the lines might snap Florida out of its current funk. Tuomo Ruutu, LW/RW, Carolina Hurricanes
2010/02/09: Tuomo Ruutu (upper body) will return to the Hurricanes lineup on Tuesday. It will be Ruutu's first game since he suffered an upper body injury while fighting Colorado's Darcy Tucker on January 8th. Ruutu is expected to play on a line with Brandon Sutter and Patrick Dwyer. Cam Ward, G, Carolina Hurricanes
2010/02/09: Cam Ward's back injury will be monitored for a couple of weeks. "After a couple of weeks, they'll have a better understanding of his condition," GM Jim Rutherford said. "They'd like to see how it settles down, let him rest, then go from there." Don't expect Ward to play in any of the Hurricanes' last three games before the Olympic break. Rutherford said that Ward may or may not require surgery, but for now the good news is that Carolina doesn't have any games scheduled between February 14th and March 2nd anyways. We'll keep you posted. (Source: Raleigh News ) |

Patrick Kaleta, RW, Buffalo Sabres
2010/02/09: Additional X-Rays on Patrick Kaleta's injured foot came back negative. That means that Kaleta doesn't appear to have a broken foot. Kaleta was wearing a medical boot to help him walk as recently as Thursday, but he's feeling a bit better now. "It just must be a real bad bone bruise that he can't do too much with it," coach Lindy Ruff said. (Source: Buffalo News) |

Steve Montador, D/RW, Buffalo Sabres
2010/02/09: Steve Montador tweaked his hip on Saturday, but he might participate in the Sabres' Tuesday morning skate. Montador missed Monday's practice due to the injury. Consider him questionable for Tuesday's game. (Source: Buffalo News) |

Ryan Miller, G, Buffalo Sabres
2010/02/09: Ryan Miller will start in Buffalo's game against Boston on Tuesday. Miller will try and help the Sabres snap their season-high four-game losing streak. Miller was between the pipes for three of those four loses and he had a 4.04 GAA and .874 save percentage in that span. Buffalo is dependent on their goaltending to win games so if Miller continues to struggle, it may not be long before their weak hold on first place in the Northeast Division evaporates. Tim Thomas, G, Boston Bruins
2010/02/09: Although Tim Thomas is rumored to be on the trading block, the Bruins have not asked him if he would waive his no-trade clause. Thomas is the reigning Vezina Trophy winner, but rookie goaltender Tuukka Rask has outplayed him this season with a 2.02 GAA and .929 save percentage in 26 games. With Thomas' hold on the number one goaltender job slipping, there have been some reports that the Bruins would like to ship Thomas and his cap hit elsewhere. However, GM Peter Chiarelli would probably talk to Thomas to find out what teams he'd waive his no-trade clause to play in before Chiarelli enters into any serious negotiations. Niclas Bergfors, RW/LW, Atlanta Thrashers
2010/02/09: Nicklas Bergfors is expected to start to get some playing time with the man advantage. The Thrashers acquired in him the Ilya Kovalchuk trade and he's already taken Kovalchuk's place on the first line. "The Bergfors kid, he's got eight power-play goals, so you've got to put him in," coach John Anderson said. "Without a practice it's kind of difficult to put him in and say, `Go do some magic.' That's why we didn't play him on the power play [Saturday], but he's going to get some time obviously. Hopefully he can do something good." Bergfors is a solid prospect and worth keeping a close eye on, but it'll probably be a season or two before he has much fantasy value. (Source: Atlanta Journal-Constitution) |

Boris Valabik, D, Atlanta Thrashers
2010/02/09: Boris Valabik is out with a torn ACL in his left knee. Valabik might need surgery, but the Thrashers won't know for sure until the swelling goes down. He already was sidelined for 27 games earlier this season when he broke his foot. We'll keep you posted. (Source: Atlanta Journal-Constitution) |
