Matt Ryan goes over 300 yards once again | 12/01/2013 8:09 PM
NewsMatt Ryan completed 28-of-47 passes for 311 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in Sunday's Week 13 win over the Bills.
ImpactRyan didn't push the ball downfield much (his longest completion went for 29 yards), but he finally got Roddy White into the mix for a 10/143/0 line. It's big for his rest-of-season value. With White getting attention on the outside, Tony Gonzalez and Harry Douglas will have more room to work the middle. Despite all the Falcons issues, Ryan is still on pace to throw for 4,628 yards with 25 touchdowns. He'll be a borderline QB1 against the Packers in Week 14, but note that the game is at Lambeau. Ryan and the Falcons traditionally fare much better in domes, where Sunday's Toronto game was.
Matt Ryan throws for 297 yards in loss | 11/21/2013 11:35 PM
NewsMatt Ryan completed 30-of-39 passes for 297 yards in Atlanta's Week 12 loss to the Saints.
ImpactRyan was a checkdown machine in a game that lulled its viewers to sleep, dumping the ball off to anyone willing to take it. Harry Douglas finished with a zero-calorie nine catches, while Darius Johnson caught six passes for 67 yards. Ryan never threatened deep, necessitating long drives to score. Most of them bogged down in field-goal range. Ryan also drew the ire of in-game attendee Samuel L. Jackson when he opted to slide rather than try for a touchdown on a 3rd-and-10 from the Saints' 10-yard line late in the second quarter. It wasn't a terrible game from a quarterback playing without his top weapon, but hardly an inspiring one. Ryan gets the Bills on the road in Week 13.
Matt Ryan struggles as Falcons fall again | 11/17/2013 4:06 PM
NewsMatt Ryan completed 17-of-32 throws for 238 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in the Falcons' Week 11 loss to Tampa Bay.
ImpactBucs DT Gerald McCoy dominated the Falcons' offensive line to the extent that C Peter Konz had to be benched in the game. Atlanta's offense simply never got off the ground, and has been struggling ever since it lost Julio Jones to a year-ending foot injury early in the season. Now entrenched as a QB2 -- not a fantasy starter -- Ryan will only be worth two-quarterback-league consideration when the Falcons face the Saints on Thursday Night Football in Week 12.
Matt Ryan struggles vs. the Legion of Boom | 11/10/2013 4:56 PM
NewsMatt Ryan completed 23-of-36 passes for 172 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in Sunday's Week 10 loss to the Seahawks.
Matt Ryan struggling recently | 11/08/2013 11:31 PM
NewsMatt Ryan has completed 55 of his last 89 pass attempts for 511 yards (5.74 YPA) and a 2:7 TD-to-INT ratio.
Silva's Week 10 Matchups
ImpactIn Week 10, Ryan takes on a Seattle defense that ranks second versus the pass and has limited opposing signal callers to a 9:13 TD-to-INT ratio through nine games. The Seahawks are tied for third in the NFL in sacks. Matt Ryan throws for 273 yards, three TDs | 10/20/2013 4:20 PM
NewsMatt Ryan completed 20-of-26 passes for 273 yards and three touchdowns in Sunday's Week 7 win over the Bucs.
ImpactRyan was highly efficient despite playing without both Julio Jones and Roddy White. He relied mostly on the short-to-intermediate passing game, but hooked up with Harry Douglas for a 34-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Both of Ryan's other touchdowns came on check downs to Jacquizz Rodgers inside the red-zone. Even if White doesn't return next week, Ryans remains locked in as a QB1 option. He's thrown at least two touchdowns in all six of his starts this season.
Matt Ryan throws for 319 yards, 2 TDs in loss | 10/07/2013 11:47 PM
NewsMatt Ryan completed 36-of-45 passes for 319 yards and two touchdowns in Monday night's 30-28, Week 5 loss to the Jets.
ImpactThe Falcons are now 1-4 and are four games behind the 5-0 Saints in the NFC South. Ryan was in love with the short-to-intermediate passes for much of the night. The Atlanta offensive line can't block anyone. Jets DL Muhammad Wilkerson wrecked whoever he lined up over the top of. This Falcons team badly needs its Week 6 bye to regroup. Adding injury to insult, Roddy White suffered a hamstring injury in the loss and Julio Jones was seen leaving the X-ray room following the game. Ryan is putting up fine fantasy numbers, but the real-life issues are mounting. He needs LT Sam Baker (knee) back. The Falcons host the Bucs in Week 7.
Ryan throws for 421 yards, 2 TDs in loss | 09/30/2013 12:28 AM
NewsMatt Ryan completed 34-of-54 passes for 421 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception in Sunday night's Week 4 loss to the Patriots.
ImpactRyan struggled for the first three quarters and was forced to constantly check down to Tony Gonzalez and Jacquizz Rodgers. He faced heavy pressure with starting LT Sam Baker sidelined, and Julio Jones was shut down for most of the night by Aqib Talib. Through four weeks, Ryan is on pace for 5,320 yards, 32 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. The Falcons host the Jets in Week 5.
Matty Ice tosses two touchdowns in loss | 09/22/2013 8:06 PM
NewsMatt Ryan completed 23-of-38 passes for 231 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in Sunday's Week 3 loss to the Dolphins.
ImpactThe Falcons fall to 1-2. They didn't lose their second game until December last season. Despite playing behind a makeshift offensive line missing LT Sam Baker, Ryan was kept relatively clean for much of the day. He hooked up with Julio Jones nine times for 115 yards. Ryan's two touchdowns went to Jason Snelling and rookie TE Levone Toilolo. Ryan and the Falcons host the Patriots next Sunday night.
Matt Ryan throws for 374 yards, 2 TDs in win | 09/15/2013 4:52 PM
NewsMatt Ryan completed 33-of-43 passes for 374 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's Week 2, 31-24 win over St. Louis.
ImpactRyan faced a good amount of pressure from the Rams' front four, as expected, but he overcame it all and delivered some good throws under heat. Roddy White was mainly a decoy for the second week in a row, so Ryan got the ball in Julio Jones' hands as much as possible. The Falcons killed the Rams with short passes into the flats and on screens, letting the receivers work up field for extra yards. Ryan is a top-eight quarterback play every week. Atlanta travels to Miami in Week 3.
Falcons reward Ryan with five-year extension | 07/25/2013 3:23 PM
NewsProfootballtalk.com reports the Falcons have signed Matt Ryan to a five-year contract extension worth $20.75 million per year in new money.
Profootballtalk on NBC Sports
ImpactSo, it's essentially a six-year, $113.75 million deal if we factor in Ryan's $10 million base salary for 2013. Per Mike Florio, Ryan will receive $63 million over the first three years of the deal -- $1 million more than Joe Flacco. Ryan also gets $59 million guaranteed. It locks him in through 2018, his age-33 season.
Report: Falcons, Ryan 'finalizing' extension | 07/25/2013 3:12 PM
NewsESPN's Chris Mortensen reports the Falcons and Matt Ryan are "finalizing" a five-year contract extension that will exceed $100 million.
Chris Mortensen on Twitter
ImpactThe deal should be agreed upon "imminently," according to Mort and his ESPN colleague, Adam Schefter. The two sides have been working toward an extension for months now, and it was bound to get done before the regular season kicked off. With an annual average at or above $20 million, Ryan will be one of the top-three highest-paid quarterbacks in the league with Drew Brees and Joe Flacco.
Talks between Matt Ryan, Falcons are ongoing | 07/17/2013 8:53 AM
NewsExtension negotiations between Matt Ryan and the Falcons are ongoing.
ImpactRyan is entering the final year of his rookie contract. He's 56-22 as a starter, is coming off back-to-back 4,000-yard seasons, has missed just two games and has taken the Falcons to the playoffs four times in five years. Agent Tom Condon is going to be asking for Joe Flacco/Aaron Rodgers kind of money, which means more than $50 million guaranteed and $18-$22 million annually. If the two sides can't reach a deal at any point this season, the franchise tag will be an option in 2014.
Report: Falcons, Ryan in 'casual' talks | 06/18/2013 4:31 PM
NewsA source with knowledge of the situation tells Profootballtalk the Falcons and Matt Ryan are engaged in "casual" extension talks, and that negotiations are expected to intensify after July 4.

Falcons owner wants Ryan deal done ASAP | 05/21/2013 11:32 AM
NewsFalcons owner Arthur Blank said he would like a Matt Ryan contract extension done as soon as possible.
Albert Breer on Twitter
ImpactBlank said the two sides are in a "good place" regarding talks, but he'd like the deal done in the "not too distant future." Now that the draft process is over with, GM Thomas Dimitroff can get to hammering out a deal with his franchise quarterback. We'd expect Ryan to approach $18-20 million annually on his new contract.
Falcons confident about Matt Ryan talks | 05/17/2013 1:14 PM
NewsFalcons GM Thomas Dimitroff reiterated confidence the team will soon work out a long-term extension with Matt Ryan.
ImpactWe'd figure the deal will go down just before or early in training camp. We all know that Matt is going to be here for a long time," said Dimitroff. "We're going to be diligent and creative with how we put together our package when the time is right. Nothing new on the timing, but suffice it to say, we will have things taken care of, again, when the time is right."
Falcons putting Matt Ryan talks on hold | 04/19/2013 1:43 PM
NewsThe Falcons will put Matt Ryan's forthcoming extension on hold until after the draft.
D. Orlando Ledbetter on Twitter
ImpactTalks will be shelved for "a few weeks," giving GM Thomas Dimitroff time to not only utilize his 11 draft picks but sign undrafted free agents and gauge the post-draft free agent market. Locking up Ryan remains an organizational priority, and undoubtedly will happen at some point before the end of this year.
Falcons hope to get Ryan deal done soon | 04/04/2013 10:02 AM
NewsGM Thomas Dimitroff reiterated that he hopes to have Matt Ryan's contract extension done before the season starts.
ImpactThursday's release of long-time starting right tackle Tyson Clabo is the first domino to fall. The Falcons are opening up cap space so they can give Ryan a deal slightly bigger than the one Joe Flacco landed with the Ravens last month. That means at least $60M in guarantees and an average annual salary of $21M-$23M. Ryan is 56-22 as an NFL starter, but just 1-4 in playoff games.

Matt Ryan set to break the bank with Falcons | 03/05/2013 9:47 AM
NewsFormer agent Joel Corry believes Matt Ryan will command a slightly bigger contract than the one just signed by Joe Flacco.
ImpactRyan is entering the final year of his rookie deal. Although no agreement is imminent, the Falcons have said they're committed to retaining the man that has gone 56-22 as an NFL starter. Ryan could very well command $60 million in guarantees, significantly more than the $52 million Flacco got.
Dimitroff confident in getting Ryan extended | 02/22/2013 5:31 PM
NewsGM Thomas Dimitroff is "confident" a Matt Ryan contract extension will get done.
Impact"It's a priority for us when the time is right," Dimitroff said. "We're not too anxious about it because we're confident that it's going to get done." The Falcons are expected to get the rest of the team straightened out, then begin talks with Ryan later this spring. He has one year left on his deal at $10 million.
Matt Ryan (shoulder) already 100 percent | 02/13/2013 4:47 PM
NewsMatt Ryan is already "fully recovered" from the sprained AC joint he suffered in the NFC Championship Game.
Impact"He's been working in the training room and this week he started working in the weight room," coach Mike Smith said. "He's recovered and we absolutely expect him to well beyond 100 percent when we start our offseason program." This should be the last we hear of an injury Ryan says he would have played through in a potential Super Bowl appearance.
Matt Ryan to target Drew Brees money | 01/28/2013 7:28 PM
NewsAccording to ESPN's John Clayton, Matt Ryan will "clearly" target Drew Brees money in 2013 extension talks.
ImpactRyan is owed $10 million entering a contract year, and the Falcons will want to lock him up before the 2013 season. Brees received $20 million per year from the Saints last July. Ryan's agent be watching the Joe Flacco-Ravens talks closely. Flacco wants Brees money as well, and Ryan has out-performed him.
Falcons confirm Ryan's shoulder injury | 01/21/2013 3:38 PM
NewsFalcons coach Mike Smith confirmed Monday that Matt Ryan suffered a sprained left shoulder in Sunday's loss, but that he will not require surgery.
Falcons on Twitter
ImpactRyan has a sprained AC joint. Smith also said Ryan would have played in a potential Super Bowl appearance despite needing 3-4 weeks to get back to 100 percent. Ryan has bowed out of Sunday's Pro Bowl. Shoulder injuries are never welcome news for quarterbacks, but Ryan has escaped with a best-case scenario. He'll be ready to go for Atlanta's offseason program. Ryan has missed just two games in his five-year career.

NewsMatt Ryan will undergo an MRI on his left (non-throwing) shoulder/collarbone on Monday.
Adam Schefter on Twitter
ImpactRyan got crunched near the end of Atlanta's come-from-ahead NFC Championship Game loss, and was in obvious pain. The injury did not appear to inhibit Ryan on his final few throws, but he may have been getting by on adrenaline. It's possible he would have been unavailable for the Super Bowl had the Falcons advanced. Regardless, Ryan will have the whole offseason to heal up if he's dealing with more than a tweak, and he should be 100 percent well ahead of training camp. His status will be updated Monday.
Matt Ryan lights up Niners, but Falcons fall | 01/20/2013 7:13 PM
NewsMatt Ryan completed 30-of-42 passes for 396 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception in the Falcons' NFC Championship Game loss to the 49ers.
ImpactRyan opened the game by finding Julio Jones wide open on a busted coverage for an easy 46-yard touchdown bomb. San Francisco struggled mightily to generate pressure, and Ryan took advantage again with a 20-yard scoring strike to Jones at the start of the second quarter. Ryan's third score came on a 10-yard dart to Tony Gonzalez between 49ers ILB Patrick Willis and SS Donte Whitner. Ryan made back-to-back mistakes in the third quarter, however, throwing an interception to 49ers LCB Chris Culliver and fumbling a snap on the ensuing drive. San Francisco didn't take advantage of either turnover as David Akers shanked a 38-yard field goal and Michael Crabtree fumbled at the goal line. Atlanta's defense simply couldn't stop Colin Kaepernick's Niners, however, and Ryan failed to execute in the red zone on the final meaningful possession down 28-24. Ryan finished the regular season as the No. 7 overall fantasy quarterback. We'd expect him to stay in that range in 2013.
Falcons looking to extend Ryan this offseason | 01/20/2013 3:32 PM
NewsFOX Sports' Jay Glazer reports the Falcons are looking to sign Matt Ryan to a contract extension this offseason.
ImpactAccording to Glazer, Atlanta is prepared to offer Ryan a "mega-contract" after the season no matter how the rest of the playoffs turn out for the team. This comes as no surprise as Ryan will be entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2013. Ryan is coming off his best individual season and led the Falcons to their first playoff win of the Mike Smith era last weekend over the Seahawks. Somewhere around six years and $100 million would seem to be the starting point for a new deal.
Matt Ryan throws for 250 yards, 3 TDs in win | 01/13/2013 5:28 PM
NewsMatt Ryan completed 24-of-35 passes for 250 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions in Sunday's Divisional round victory over the Seahawks.
ImpactIt was a microcosm of Ryan's five-year career. He was near flawless in staking the Falcons to a 20-0 halftime lead, but a bone-headed decision on a deep-ball interception gave the Seahawks the impetus for a comeback. Ryan stalled on back-to-back unimaginative fourth-quarter drives while Russell Wilson stole the show for a 28-27 lead late in the game. Reminiscent of the early-season victory over the Panthers, Ryan managed to set up Matt Bryant's game-winning field goal despite getting the ball with only 31 seconds remaining. Bryant's ability to convert the 49-yard gave Ryan his first playoff win in four tries, setting up an NFC Championship game showdown with the 49ers.
