CSN Bay Area
ImpactIt's a procedural move, as Bowman is expected to open 2014 on the reserve/PUP list. Bowman is five months removed from knee surgery and targeting a midseason return.
Navorro Bowman to return in Week 7 or 9? | 06/04/2014 9:46 PM
NewsCSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco projects 49ers ILB Navorro Bowman's (ACL, MCL surgery) likeliest possible return dates October 19 at Denver or November 2 against St. Louis, following San Francisco's Week 8 bye.
CSN Bay Area
ImpactSo that's Week 7 or Week 9. Maiocco is just guessing, but it's an informed guess. The Niners are tentatively expected to use a rotation of Michael Wilhoite and rookie Chris Borland next to Patrick Willis until Bowman returns.
49ers ILB Bowman restructures contract | 05/22/2014 3:12 PM
News49ers ILB Navorro Bowman agreed to convert $3.27 million of his $4 million 2014 base salary into a signing bonus in order to create cap space.
ImpactBowman doesn't lose any money and instead gets a $3.27 million check handed to him. He'll earn a fully-guaranteed $730,000 base salary this season. The move creates a little less than $3 million in cap room for the 49ers, money which could possibly be used for a Colin Kaepernick extension. Bowman continues to to recover from a torn ACL and MCL and will start the season on PUP.
Navorro Bowman likely to open season on PUP | 04/25/2014 6:09 PM
News49ers GM Trent Baalke confirmed he expects ILB Navorro Bowman (knee) to open the season on the PUP list.
CSN Bay Area
ImpactBowman is making progress from his knee surgeries, but is just two months into the rehab program. He's not going to be ready for Week 1 and a mid-season return remains his most likely timetable. If the 49ers place Bowman on reserve/PUP, he'll be ineligible for the first six weeks.
Navorro Bowman aiming for mid-season return | 04/03/2014 1:05 PM
News49ers ILB Navorro Bowman (ACL, MCL surgery) expects to return "about the middle of the season."
Bill Williamson on Twitter
ImpactBowman said Tuesday that he's ahead of schedule in his rehab, but mid-season was always his most likely return date. Speaking in February, coach Jim Harbaugh all but assured that Bowman would begin the year on the reserve/PUP list, costing him the first six games. Bowman is a little more than two months removed from shredding his knee in the NFC Championship Game.
Bowman (ACL, MCL) says he's ahead of schedule | 04/01/2014 9:39 PM
News49ers ILB Navorro Bowman (ACL, MCL surgery) says he's ahead of schedule in his rehab, and that the 49ers are "excited" by his progress.
Steve Corkran on Twitter
ImpactAlthough it's nice to hear Bowman is ahead of schedule instead of vice versa, it's still extremely early in the rehab process. We're unlikely to get a realistic idea of his potential return date before training camp. Coach Jim Harbaugh has suggested Bowman will begin the season on the reserve/PUP list, costing him the first six games of the season.
Bowman not expected to be ready for Week 1 | 02/20/2014 1:29 PM
News49ers coach Jim Harbaugh doesn't expect ILB Navorro Bowman (ACL) to be ready for Week 1, and considers mid-season his most "realistic" return date.
Impact"Realistically, halfway through the season (or) something like that would be more realistic (than Week 1)," Harbaugh said. "But I never underestimate NaVorro Bowman." Harbaugh's words are a strong indication that Bowman will begin the season on the reserve/PUP list, automatically costing him the first six games. Bowman was even farther along in the postseason than Robert Griffin III was when he tore his ACL, so Week 1 was always a remote possibility.
Navorro Bowman (knee) having surgery Tue. | 02/04/2014 11:07 AM
News49ers ILB Navorro Bowman is undergoing surgery on his left knee Tuesday.
CSN Bay Area
ImpactDr. James Andrews will perform the reconstruction of Bowman's left ACL in Pensacloa, Fla. Bowman suffered the gruesome knee injury that wrecked his ACL and MCL in the NFC Championship game three Sundays ago. Bowman has his youth working in his favor -- he's just 25 -- but is highly questionable for Week 1.
Bowman will undergo surgery next month | 01/21/2014 4:21 PM
News49ers ILB Navorro Bowman (torn ACL, MCL) won't undergo surgery for "two or three weeks," and is without a timetable for a return.
CSN Bay Area
ImpactThe swelling around Bowman's MCL must dissipate before he can go under the knife. It's the same issue that delayed Rob Gronkowski's operation. Coach Jim Harbaugh declined to speculate on when Bowman might return, saying "he's got grueling rehab ahead." Bowman is highly questionable for Week 1.
Report: Navorro Bowman has torn ACL & MCL | 01/20/2014 5:40 PM
NewsProfootballtalk reports 49ers ILB Navorro Bowman has been diagnosed with a torn left ACL and MCL.
Profootballtalk on Twitter
ImpactPer a league source, the diagnosis was confirmed by a Monday MRI. The 49ers should release official word some time this week. Although an MCL tear is a much smaller issue than an ACL tear, it will delay Bowman's operation. His MCL needs time to heal. Even were Bowman to go under the knife today, he'd be in a race against time to get cleared for Week 1. Now, he's a serious candidate to begin 2014 on the reserve/PUP list. It's a huge blow for the 2013 first-team All Pro, but he does have youth on his side. Bowman won't turn 26 until May. For what it's worth, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Bowman is expected to be ready for Week 1. In reality, it's too early to have any sort of a grip on his return timeline.
49ers fear MCL & ACL damage for Bowman | 01/20/2014 1:40 PM
NewsProfootballtalk.com reports the 49ers fear ILB Navorro Bowman injured both his ACL and MCL in Sunday's NFC Championship loss.
Profootballtalk on NBC Sports
ImpactAn MRI will reveal the extent of Bowman's knee injury. MCL injuries on top of ACL tears can delay the time of surgery, as Rob Gronkowski tore both ligaments this season and had to wait over a month before going under the knife. It appears Bowman is going to be very questionable for Week 1 of the 2014 season.
49ers fear ACL injury for ILB Navorro Bowman | 01/19/2014 10:26 PM
NewsAccording to the 49ers, "preliminary" testing indicates a left ACL injury for ILB Navorro Bowman
Matt Maiocco on Twitter
ImpactBowman will undergo further testing on Monday which will likely confirm a torn ACL. It's the worst possible news for the All Pro, who was injured creating a fumble at the goal line. Bowman was nearly singlehandedly wrecking the Seahawks' offense before going down, registering 14 tackles and a sack as he harangued Russell Wilson. Still only 26 (in May), Bowman is signed through 2018. If his ACL is indeed torn, he'll be highly questionable for Week 1, and a candidate for reserve/PUP.

ImpactThe All Pro got his left knee bent back in horrific fashion as he was forcing a fumble near the goal line. Navorro Bowman back-to-back All-Pro | 01/29/2013 9:19 AM
News49ers ILB Navorro Bowman has been voted onto the All-Pro first-team in two straight seasons.
ImpactAlthough not as heralded as teammate and fellow inside linebacker Patrick Willis, Bowman is nearly as good. Over the last two seasons, he has racked up 292 tackles, four sacks and 14 pass breakups, earning a five-year, $45.25 million extension from the Niners in November. Chalk up another hit for Penn State's linebacker factory.
