Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Monday that he will not use Torii Hunter in place of Austin Jackson (hamstring) in center field.

Impact

Hunter has only appeared in one game in center field since the start of 2011, so the Tigers want to keep him where he's comfortable in right field. Leyland plans to rely on a combination of Don Kelly, Andy Dirks and Avisail Garcia to fill in. Kelly is making the start there Monday night, but Garcia is likely to get most of the playing time.

Torii Hunter went 4-for-5 with three runs scored as the Tigers pounded the Astros on Saturday.

The Tigers plated 13 runs on 18 hits in the game, and Hunter did his part with three singles and a double. The veteran outfielder also stole his first base of the year. He's quietly had a fantastic season as the Tigers' No. 2 hitter, now batting .361 with 22 runs and 16 RBI. Hunter should be owned in all standard leagues.

Hunter was told that the organization was hand-cuffed by the bad contract of Vernon Wells and couldn't offer more than a $5 million deal. But the Angels then inked Josh Hamilton to a massive five-year, $125 million free agent pact. Hunter added that he would've been content to leave on good terms had the Angels just been honest.
