Doug Fister was knocked around for five earned runs on nine hits over 4 2/3 innings in a loss on Sunday night against the Rangers.
Fister worked up a high pitch count early and had to be pulled after giving up four runs in a disastrous fifth inning. It was his first non-quality start this season and just his second loss. Fister will take a 3.62 ERA and 1.26 WHIP into a matchup with the Twins on Friday.

He'll toe the slab next against the Rangers on Sunday.

He'll strive to get back in the win column when he takes on the Indians at home on Friday.

Fister yielded eight hits and a walk, but he countered that with five strikeouts. The only real damage done against him was on a run-scoring sacrifice fly by Mark DeRosa in the second inning. Fister is now 2-0 with a 2.77 ERA through his first two starts of the 2013 regular season. The Mariners are his next opponent.

The runs came on homers from James Loney and Ryan Roberts. Fister, who was having some very unusual control troubles this spring, went without walking a batter today. He had walked 12 in 19 1/3 innings, and he also threw a couple of wild pitches last time out.

Fister posted a solid 3.45 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 137/37 K/BB ratios over 161 2/3 innings in 2012, and represents a very capable middle of the rotation arm in mixed leagues.

Fister hasn't pitched well in any of his three starts so far; he's given up a homer in each and amassed an 11.57 ERA. It's too early to start being concerned, but then, we don't have particularly high hopes for Fister this year anyway.

It's a big raise for Fister, who was arbitration-eligible for the first time. The tall right-hander posted a 3.45 ERA in his first full season with the Tigers in 2012 after putting up a 2.83 mark the season before. He'll be a key cog in the Detroit rotation again in 2013.
