Impact

Descalso could only watch Cliff Pennington's game-winning single scorch past him in the bottom of the 16th, but he certainly did more than his share to keep the game going as long as it did. In his third consecutive start, Descalso shrugged off a pair of off-nights (1-for-7 to begin the season) to lead St. Louis' offense. As long as David Freese (back) is out, he's worth starting in NL-only leagues. Expect him to improve on last year's .227/.303/.324 slash line.

While we'd prefer to see Matt Carpenter win the job, Descalso is the favorite to start at second base for the Cardinals. He won't offer a lot of offense, though he should improve on last year's .227/.303/.324 line.

Impact

Descalso is capable of playing third base and even shortstop, but will come into spring training with the second base job as his to lose. He batted just .227/.303/.324 with four home runs and 10 triples in 426 plate appearances last season, and will likely face heavy competition from Matt Carpenter and Kolten Wong.
