Brewers recall Mike Fiers to pitch in bullpen | 05/11/2013 7:56 PM
NewsBrewers recalled RHP Mike Fiers from High-A Brevard County.
ImpactTom Gorzelanny was placed on the disabled list Saturday, so the Brewers needed another reliever. Through his first three appearances (two in relief, one as a starter) with Milwaukee this season, Fiers owns an 8.59 ERA, 1.77 WHIP and 1/2 K/BB ratio over 7 1/3 innings. He will carry no fantasy relevance no matter his role.
Fiers assigned to High-A Brevard County | 05/07/2013 2:38 PM
NewsMike Fiers has been transferred from Triple-A Nashville to High-A Brevard County so that he can attend to a personal situation closer to his home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
ImpactFiers was demoted last month, but he posted a 1.59 ERA and 17/9 K/BB ratio in 17 innings over three starts in Triple-A. The Brewers were happy to accommodate his request, but are hopeful that he'll be able to return to Nashville before long.
Brewers option RHP Mike Fiers to Triple-A | 04/18/2013 4:18 PM
NewsBrewers optioned RHP Mike Fiers to Triple-A Nashville.
ImpactNot unexpected, as Fiers struggled in his lone start on April 6 and was already scratched from his scheduled start on Saturday. He'll try to work through his mechanical issues in the minors. It's not clear who will replace him in the rotation, but Tyler Thornburg and Hiram Burgos are among the internal options.
Michael Fiers might not start Saturday | 04/16/2013 9:00 PM
NewsMichael Fiers might not make his scheduled start on Saturday.
ImpactAfter a poor spring training, Fiers was knocked around for six runs over five innings in his lone start this season, and the Brewers aren't sure they want to give him another one. It's possible he'll get another shot, but the club won't hesitate to use him in relief before then if needed. "It will come down to what happens in some of these games," manager Ron Roenicke said. "If Fiers gets in them, or we think Fiers is needed to be our long guy in the bullpen, then we'll try to go grab somebody else. But it's going to come down, probably, to a couple of days before that start." Tyler Thornburg and Hiram Burgos are options to replace Fiers.
Fiers surrenders six runs in loss to D'Backs | 04/06/2013 11:12 PM
NewsMichael Fiers surrendered six earned runs over five innings Saturday in the Brewers' loss to Arizona.
ImpactFiers gave up nine hits -- including two homers -- and issued one walk. The 27-year-old right-hander was great last season, posting a 3.74 ERA and 9.5 K/9 in 127 2/3 innings as a rookie. But there's little chance of an encore in 2013. He's now 0-1 with a 10.80 ERA.
Michael Fiers claims final spot in rotation | 03/29/2013 6:40 PM
NewsMichael Fiers has claimed the fifth and final spot in the Brewers' Opening Day rotation, with Chris Narveson heading to the bullpen.
ImpactIt had been speculated that Fiers would be knocked out of the rotation after getting knocked around in the Cactus League, but they would rather limit Narveson's innings and ease him back into action. While a repeat of his 2012 effort isn't very likely, Fiers should hold value in NL-only and deeper mixed leagues while he's getting the ball every fifth day.
Michael Fiers expected to begin season in pen | 03/29/2013 9:55 AM
NewsMichael Fiers is expected to lose his spot in the Brewers' rotation following the addition of Kyle Lohse.
ImpactMost figured it would be youngster Wily Peralta that would get the boot, but it appears that Fiers getting knocked around in his last few Cactus League appearances has cost him. He will be used in long relief, as the Brewers are expected to carry 13 pitchers to start the season while Lohse builds up his stamina. Peralta is an intriguing late-round option in mixed leagues.
Fiers hammered for seven runs in loss | 03/21/2013 6:57 PM
NewsMike Fiers was knocked around for seven runs over just three innings in Thursday's loss to the White Sox.
ImpactFiers was hit hard for the second straight outing, giving up eight hits -- including a pair of homers -- and two walks. His ERA is up to 6.98 for the spring, but he'll enter the season with a rotation spot. Since he relies so heavily on deception rather than velocity, the jury is still out on whether he can replicate his impressive 2012 numbers over the long-term.
Mike Fiers roughed up in Cactus League start | 03/16/2013 7:57 PM
NewsMike Fiers allowed eight hits and five runs in four innings of the Brewers 9-9 tie with the Reds Saturday.
ImpactFiers wasn't just getting dinked and dunked, either, as he allowed five doubles and a home run. After an impressive 22-start run in 2012 in which he struck out over a batter per inning, there is some question as to whether the 27-year-old can duplicate that success over a full season. Fortunately for the righty, his rotation spot is guaranteed heading into the season.
Fiers gives up two unearned runs in win | 03/11/2013 6:47 PM
NewsMichael Fiers yielded two unearned runs Monday against the Dodgers.
ImpactFiers gave up six hits and a walk while striking out three. He was cruising along until a dropped fly ball by Carlos Gomez opened the door for two runs in the fourth inning. The 27-year-old right-hander surprised many last season by posting a 3.74 ERA and should be worth a look in the later rounds of mixed league drafts.
Fiers strong in Cactus League debut | 02/23/2013 7:11 PM
NewsMichael Fiers threw two scoreless innings Saturday in the Brewers' 2-1 victory over the A's.
ImpactFiers gave up a hit and walked two but held the A's scoreless, recording two strikeouts in his two innings of work. The 27-year-old was a revelation in 2012, when he posted a 3.74 ERA in 22 starts. Maybe the most surprising thing about Fiers' 2012 was his strikeout total; despite an underwhelming fastball, Fiers punched out 135 batters in 127 2/3 innings. It remains to be seen whether he can build on last season, but Saturday was a good start.
