The Redskins took a lot of heat last year for using RG3 on designed runs, leaving him susceptible to big hits. Kyle Shanahan disagreed, saying the zone-read "kept Griffin safe," and the quarterback's injuries came "on broken pass plays." He added Griffin needs to know when to slide, but expect the Redskins to use RG3's running ability as much as they did in his rookie year.

Either way, it's hard not to be encouraged by the reports.

"Being slowed down by the knee kind of slowed the game down for me because I had to slow down and it made me have to get through a lot of my reads," Griffin said. There's no doubt the Redskins are going to dial back RGIII's designed runs, so improvement in the pocket will be a must. It's not as if RGIII is going to be an entirely different player, however.

The Washington Examiner reports Robert Griffin progressed to running on his surgically-repaired knee.
RG3 was reportedly sprinting the length of the field, while his teammates performed special teams drills. Griffin said "I was kind of explosive sprinting there," but added it won't be until sometime next month when he begins to do "explosive sprinting and cutting." His recovery remains ahead of schedule.

Peterson, of course, set the gold standard for knee rehabs with his lighting-quick return and subsequent domination last season. RGIII said he won't seek to emulate AD's return, however. Thus far, RGIII appears on pace with Peterson's already-legendary recovery, but as we've been saying all offseason, it will be hard to truly gauge where he's at before training camp.

For a player not even five months removed from reconstructive surgery, it's impressive. All the whispers that Griffin is ahead of schedule appear to have merit.

Redskins GM Bruce Allen conceded it's "too early to tell" whether Robert Griffin III (ACL, LCL surgery) will be ready on the first day of training camp.
"It's too early to tell right now," Allen said. "He is doing everything that the doctors want him to do. ... But it's really too premature to speculate on where his medical condition is until we give him a physical when training camp starts July 25." Allen said RG3 is able to do "a lot of drill work on his own." Expect Griffin to open training camp on the active/PUP list.

Shanny has taken the criticism of his handling of RGIII's injury to heart. "We need to make sure he doesn't go too quickly because he could set it back," Shanahan said. "There's time it's going to take to do it the right way. The ligament needs time to heal. ... When you see how hard he's working, everyone is really optimistic. But you have to let a ligament heal." Griffin is tentatively on pace to be ready for Week 1.

Andrews compared Griffin to Bo Jackson and Adrian Peterson in his motivation and ability to recover. While the news sounds promising, it's important to not take Andrews' comments as an indication Griffin will be ready for Week 1. There's still a long road ahead in terms of his recovery.

After rehabbing with Robert Griffin III (ACL, LCL surgery) earlier this month, TE Fred Davis came away "stunned" by Griffin's fast progress.
"He definitely looks really good," said Davis of RG3. "You can barely even tell that he's hurt. He's doing every drill. He looks comfortable and normal to me. Considering it's been just three months since Griffin's surgery, it's silly to speculate on his Week 1 status. All we can glean from recent reports is that the initial phase of his rehabilitation has gone well and the Redskins are pleased with his progress. Still, it's worth noting that a similarly spectacular athlete in Derrick Rose has been sidelined for nearly 11 months with his ACL tear despite sustaining no setbacks.

Griffin underwent surgery to repair his ACL and MCL and a "mild" medial meniscus tear on January 9. According to Yahoo Sports, "those close" to Robert Griffin III believe the Redskins and others around Griffin are placing "undue pressure" on RG3 to "return too quickly" from his ACL and LCL tears.
They believe Griffin is at risk of reinjury. Redskins team Dr. James Andrews has publicly deemed RG3 "way ahead of schedule," and Griffin is starring in an Adidas ad campaign entitled "All in for Week 1." Said one source, "It's been like six weeks; what are we doing this for? He's not running yet. (Playing in Week 1) is ridiculous to talk about." Added another person close to Griffin, "I don't understand why we're talking about how close he is to playing or not right now. Let him just get better; there's a long way to go."

Well, duh. Once camp opens, Griffin will be about six months removed from surgery. By opening camp on PUP, that will open another roster spot for the Redskins to bring in a camp arm at the quarterback position. RGIII has vowed to be ready for Week 1, but that is still up in the air at this point. His recovery seems to be going well, though. Griffin was at the NFL Honors on Saturday night, and he was walking without a limp and needed no crutches.

Griffin received 29 of a possible 50 votes to beat out Andrew Luck (11) and Russell Wilson (10) for the award. In his first year as the Redskins' quarterback, Griffin posted 27 total touchdowns to just five interceptions and led Washington to its first NFC East title in 13 years. It's the second consecutive season that a quarterback has won after Cam Newton took home the honors in 2011. Griffin's overall consistency and playmaking ability ultimately made him the right choice. His 102.4 quarterback rating set the NFL record for a rookie.

Based on the opinions of knee surgeons, the Washington Times believes it would be "ambitious" to expect Robert Griffin (ACL, LCL surgery) to be healthy in time for Week 1 of 2013.
Beat writer Rich Campbell cautions not to bet against RG3, but encourages Skins fans to "begin making friends with the concept" of Kirk Cousins opening the season as Washington's starting quarterback. Considering Griffin's long-term value to the franchise, Campbell wouldn't rule out the Redskins placing him on PUP to open the year. Doing so would cost RG3 the first six games.

According to the Washington Post, medical experts not involved in Robert Griffin III's January 9 reconstructive knee surgery have "serious doubts" about Griffin's availability for Week 1 in 2013.
This was a throwaway line in the Post's review of the Redskins' 2012 season, but we found it notable nonetheless. It echoes a recent Profootballtalk.com report that there is "much greater concern" with Griffin's knee than anyone involved with the team has let on. Of course, we heard the same early last offseason about Adrian Peterson. Hopefully for the Redskins, RG3's recovery powers are on par with the Vikings' future Hall of Fame back.

A league source tells Profootballtalk.com that there is "much greater concern" about Robert Griffin III's reconstructed right knee than Griffin or "anyone connected to the Redskins" has let on.
Griffin will end up rehabbing both knees because surgeons were forced to use a patellar tendon graft from his left knee in order to fix his right. He tore the ACL, LCL, and partially tore his meniscus in the right knee. Per PFT's source, the "biggest concern" is with Griffin's knee cartilage. Due to two knee constructions and ultimately three surgeries since 2009 at Baylor, there is concern "about how much (cartilage) remains and how long it will last" in Griffin's knee(s). A potential end result could be a bone-on-bone condition, which can lead to microfracture surgery and/or shorten a football player's career.

In addition to LCL and ACL damage, Robert Griffin III also suffered a minor medial meniscus tear in the Redskins' season-ending loss last week.
It's similar to Adrian Peterson, who suffered meniscus damage in addition to the torn ACL last December. The good news is that RGIII went under the knife just three days after shredding the knee. The meniscus damage shouldn't have a major impact on his recovery timetable.

Although Dr. James Andrews estimates that "95 percent" of ACL reconstructive procedures are successful in sports, he sets the number closer to 55 percent among NFL running backs.
Obviously Robert Griffin III isn't a running back, but the Redskins' 2012 pistol-based offense was built on his ability to get out of the pocket and make plays on the run. "So is that a failure of the ACL surgery? No, but that's a failure of that running back losing a step and losing ability to cut on a dime and is not able to play," explained Andrews. "So it's not as rosy as what it might look depending on the high level sport the further you go up the ladder, to try to play football, for example, in the professional league after an ACL operation."

According to the Washington Post, people within the Redskins organization "believe it is optimistic" to expect that Robert Griffin III (knee) will be 100 percent for Week 1.
Griffin has roughly eight months until the 2013 season opens. NFL Players have recently been able to recover in the 6-7 month range, but Griffin's situation is complicated by the fact that he has now torn the ACL in his right knee twice. There won't be a truly concrete timetable here for quite some time. As Dr. James Andrews said, "it is everybody's hope and belief that due to Robert's high motivation, he will be ready for the 2013 season."

According Redskins team doctor James Andrews, Robert Griffin III underwent a "direct repair" of his torn LCL Wednesday, and a "re-do" of his previous ACL reconstruction.
In other words, Griffin has undergone a full reconstruction of his right knee. Andrews declined to offer an exact timetable for Griffin's return, but said "it is everybody's hope and belief that due to Robert's high motivation, he will be ready for the 2013 season." As Adrian Peterson and others have proven, ACL tears are no longer a particularly imposing injury to come back from, but RGIII's case is made a bit tricker by the fact that this is his second reconstruction. Nevertheless, Griffin is every bit the athlete AD is, and we'd be far from surprised if he's ready for Week 1. His timeline should clarify in the coming weeks.

Robert Griffin III's father confirmed that his son is undergoing a full ACL replacement Wednesday morning.
RG2 said RG3 actually only had a partial tear of the ACL in addition to his LCL tear, but Dr. James Andrews determined that the full repair was needed. "Robert's ACL is intact, but not enough for his profession," Griffin II said in a text message to USA Today. "You and I could be fine. But he is an athlete. So they will replace." As of 11 a.m. ET Wednesday, Griffin was still being operated on by Andrews. The initial reported timetable is 6-8 months.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports Robert Griffin III will undergo a full knee construction after Dr. James Andrews diagnosed Griffin with "complete" tears of both his right ACL and LCL.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Robert Griffin III will undergo LCL surgery this week, and doctors will then determine whether his ACL has been damaged.

The evaluation was still ongoing as of 4:00 p.m. ET, though it's not clear how long it will last. Griffin is seeking clarity after Redskins doctors offered conflicting opinions over whether the results showed old or new tears in the knee.

The Washington Post reports that Robert Griffin III's MRI revealed a partially torn ACL and LCL in his right knee.
Griffin is traveling down to Florida to be examined by Dr. James Andrews on Tuesday to determine if the injuries are old or new. It's not clear whether surgery will be required or how long the quarterback will be sidelined if the injuries are determined to be new ones. RGIII is hoping to avoid reconstructive right knee surgery for the second time in his football career, but that remains to be seen. Griffin underwent the MRI after his knee bent awkwardly and buckled underneath him in the fourth quarter of Sunday's playoff loss to the Seahawks.

RGIII tweaked the knee when he went to plant on an end-zone throw to Pierre Garcon. Although he stayed in the game for a touchdown to Logan Paulsen, Griffin was limping badly. He has since gone to the trainers' table behind the Redskins bench, though Kirk Cousins is not warming up. After getting examined by Dr. James Andrews, Griffin returned to the game without missing a snap.

RGIII was sporting just a rubber sleeve in warmups, but he's going back to the limiting brace for game action. Doctors won't allow him to play without the extra protection. "Anytime you wear a brace like that, it's to protect you, so it's going to cause a natural limp," Griffin acknowledged this week. "You're not going to be able to bend your knee normally. It restricts your flexion and your extension." He won't be as explosive as he was for the majority of the season.

This conflicts heavily with what head coach Mike Shanahan said shortly after the initial injury happened. Andrews was on the sideline that day, and Shanahan said he asked the world-renowned surgeon if RGIII could go back in. Shanahan said he was told by Andrews that he was good to go. Andrews goes as far to say that he's the one that finally shut Griffin down and adds that he's still a "nervous wreck" and "holding my breath" over the situation. Despite all of this, RGIII will be out there Sunday afternoon against the Seahawks, sporting the knee brace and all.

ESPN's Sal Paolantonio says Robert Griffin III's leadership qualities and intangibles are "what sets him apart at age 22 from anybody I've ever covered, anybody I've ever seen in 20 years of covering the National Football League."
While it's true that RGIII's intangibles would mean little if he didn't also possess special physical gifts, it's high praise from a respected former Naval officer. "He could lead men into battle," said SalPal. "And I don't ever say that about football players, because I know what it takes to do that. But he's got IT ... the command, the presence, the charisma, the poise, the generosity of spirit, the personal physical courage, the toughness, the dynamic range of understanding that you have to treat [different personalities] differently if you want to be the leader of a large group of men."

RGIII was slowed down by his bulky brace last week, however. "The brace helps him at least mentally know that he's not putting too much pressure on it," explained Shanahan.
