New Chargers coach Mike McCoy believes Philip Rivers can complete 70 percent of his passes in 2013.

Rivers converted just 63.5 percent of his throws as he posted a 53:35 TD:INT ratio over the past two seasons. "I've been blown away by his anticipation and willingness to learn,'' McCoy said. Per SI's Peter King, McCoy plans to "harp on" getting Rivers to "trust the system," and not fall in love with his ability to fit deep balls into small windows. A career 63.6 passer, Rivers isn't going to suddenly become Drew Brees, but it's not hard to believe he'll be more accurate with deep-ball aficionado Norval Turner now in Cleveland. |

Acee bases this on San Diego's decision not to restructure the 31-year-old's contract despite being up against the cap. Rivers has three years left on a seven-year, $98.25 million deal, and he's set to count $17.1 million against the cap in 2013. He has turned the ball over 47 times and has been sacked 79 times over the last two seasons. If Rivers doesn't get some help up front, things may not change much. The new front office and coaching staff also has no ties to Rivers. |

Rivers got absolutely battered in 2012, getting sacked on 50 of his 587 drop backs. The Bolts' most glaring need is at left tackle, where Jared Gaither up and quit last season. Picking 11th, the Chargers are in prime position to draft an impact lineman. |

McCoy promised to be "heavily involved" in game-planning and installation, but "game-day responsibilities" will keep him from calling plays. It's the opposite of Norv Turner's approach the past few seasons. McCoy cited the presence of Philip Rivers as a primary factor in accepting the job. The respect is mutual. "Of the potential candidates, I can honestly say this is the guy I was hoping for," Rivers told XEPRS-AM on Tuesday. "I feel great about it." |
